Frank Cadogan Cowper (British, 1877-1958)
Frank Cadogan Cowper was born the son of a writer in Wicken, Northamptonshire, England. In 1896 he attended St John's Wood Art School and in 1897 the Royal Academy Schools where his first works were accepted in 1899. Later he would travel to Italy to work in the studio of historical painter E.A. Abbey, R.A.

Cowper's subjects were usually literary, historical or religious, done in the Pre-Raphaelite style with close attention to detail and rich color. He was reputed to have gone to lengths to research the subjects of his paintings. In 1910 Frank Cowper, along with six other artist such as John Byam Shaw were comissioned to paint murals in the Houses of Parliment's Eastern Corridor and in 1912 was asked to return for smaller pieces. He was also known for his portrait and watercolor works. In 1907 he was elected A.R.A. and made a R.A. in 1934. Copwer moved to the United States during the Second World War but returned to England in 1944 where he continued to paint until 1957.

Museums: Frank Cowper may be found at the Denver Art Museum and the Tate Gallery, London.
