Franklin DMQ-119 Review
Do you need a pocket dictionary/thesaurus?
The screen is small on this unit. If you don't intend to carry it around a larger desktop version may be better. In our review we found it lightweight and easy to use but the screen is not large.
Is word definition important to you?
Please remember this is Franklin's entry level dictionary. If you read the line below from the manufacturer's description 'Collins Express English Dictionary' note the word express. It is a cut down mini dictionary, not a full dictionary and therefore does not have a very large list of definitions. Of course it is much cheaper than a more comprehensive model.
It it the right one for you?

Users Reviews
Overall I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. Recently purchased this item for one of my young relation who is studyng in a english medium school in abroad. Its only fault, the keypad is a bit small (large fingers may find it a bit difficult) but you can always use the end of a pencil or pen.
He carries it all the time and is finding it very helpful. This product reduces homework time and encourages him to check spelling and meaning. Also there doesn't seem to be as much information as previous machines that we have had. It is easy to use and really helpful, not every word is stored but the majority are. The previous one that I had, the keys were 'solid' otherwise a very good buy. The DMQ is great value for money.
Brought for kids. This is a good dictionary economical, small and handy can carry easily. This product is very useful and very easy and quick to use.
Not too expensive to take to school. The screen is easy to read, and the menu is easy to navigate. Pity, as it looks attractive and has a very clear screen. Overall, we are pleased with it for our purposes.
I really can't think of a single negative & would recommend this to anyone without reservation. This is perfect if you need a little help with crosswords, anagrams etc. The gadget does exactly what I hoped for plus a few more which are often only available on higher end models. Otherwise it's ok. DMQ- Collins Express Dictionary has great functions. The clock, personal data & my word lists probably reduce the amount of memory available for the real tasks of an alectronic crossword solver.
the functionality was better but i find the display more difficult to read , very smal this little thing is realy good i had one before this so knew it wood be ok small enough to carry with you in your hanbag Having purchased, with ease, at my local Argos store, my son was keen to use the electronic dictionary, and indeed he was not disappointed. It was a bit smaller than anticipated (should have looked closer at the dimensions) and the buttons tend to stick down. It help him with finding words for his crosswords Having an older model for many years I bought the same make and found a vast improvement in this model This is one of the smallest electronic dictionaries on the market and definitely proves there are good goods in small parcels. Thank you This product is very useful and very easy and quick to use Fits in my suit pocket, helps with the odd word i forgot how to spell or when i need to clarify some meanings. Good features , Easy to operate , Overall it is good and very good for gift purposes, useful and handy for kids DMQ- Collins Express Dictionary has great functions. Both of my children use the dictionary.
Fits in a pencil case. While we are happy with the size and weight of the product, we have already found, during our first few days, that several fairly commonly used words do not have a meaning contained within the dictionary. I would have prefered another the same but I think they are obsolete nowadays.
It can only solve anagrams of up tocharacters and only solve crossword clues of up tocharacters. This little gizmo has been truly genius for myyear old son who is severely dyslexic.Did read reviews from various websites this product was recommended on the British Dylexia Association website as an aid to people with this problem.Well worth the money compact enough to go in a school blazer great all-rounder. Easy to use, no complicated fiddly buttons and far superior in every way to larger, fancier and more expensive other devices I've used. This was a very good buy. Good value!
The package arrived on time and was in excellent condition. I certainly wouldn't be without one - it makes crosswords much easier to complete whilst educating yourself at the same time. however, i believe, the reading screen should be a bit bige This was a very good buy. Not much good for The Times or Telegraph. This, along with the fact that you can only store 0 words in the word builder section, which can be reduced to 0 words if they are not already in the dictionary, are the reasons why this product is not gettingstars. This replacement is smaller in size, not as easy to use, but I suppose it will take some getting used to. This was a replacement for a Franklin Spellchecker I had had for many tears. Excellent.
Its a wonderful little number. however, i believe, the reading screen should be a bit biger. It has the Express Collins dictionary so its not a massive dictionary like the more expensive ones but for everyday use it's great.
A good choice, but only complaint is that with the keys being 'soft touch' they can stick down without you noticing, until you see a line of the same letter. I like it because she still learning This was bought as a christmas present and my brother in law absolutely loves it. it gives quick results and very portable.
I was replacing a Franklin Bookman Dictionary and Thesaurus which was getting on its last legs. Small and compact and fits neatly into a top pocket. Definitions are short and concise and they don't confuse our 0yr old.
Our Review Conclusions
The majority of users love it.A compact, smart looking machine
Dictionary, thesaurus, speller, word games - what more do you need?
Good value - you get a lot of functions for your money.
Overall a quality introduction to Electronic Dictionaries.
The screen is not large so you may want to review a desktop version.
The usual Franklin add-ons such as databank and world time which are not of much use.
Express dictionary: if you need lots of definitions this model is not for you. Try the ER6100 instead:
