Frank McCourt - Why him?
I first came across Frank McCourt after visiting Ireland 4 times in one year. Feeling desperately sorry for myself and yearning for a life on the Emerald Isle, and after having read everything on Ireland I had, including the Famine, my beloved daughter Doey handed me a copy of Angela's Ashes and said, "Hey Mum, I think this guy's Irish... and I think it's non-fiction too!" I was sold!
What I wasn't prepared for was the ridiculous sounds emanating from my bedroom as I lay there that night trying to stifle not even giggles, but guffaws of laughter - and then tears, as I was transformed into a place I could only have imagined.
Shortly after finishing the book (well that very evening in fact) I went in search of the DVD... and I was not disappointed. Very often the images and portrayals in a moving picture do not live up to one's expectations after reading the book. Wow, was I in a state of transformation. Frank McCourt had a fan for life.
Francis "Frank" McCourt (born 19 August 1930) was an Irish-American teacher and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, best known as the author of Angela's Ashes. Brother of author and actor Malachy McCourt . Sadly Frank passed away in 2009. His work will live in our hearts for a lifetime - crazy sense of humor.. when reading his work I could almost hear him reading to me :)

Frank McCourt : Author Of Angela's Ages
The most amusing, saddening and descriptive writer of current times and my great love!
Biography of the Late Frank McCourtFrank McCourt was born to Malachy and Angela McCourt, in Brooklyn. Unable to find work in the depths of the Depression, the McCourts returned to their native Ireland in 1934, where they sank deeper into poverty.
McCourt's father, an alcoholic, was often without work, and drank up what little money he earned. When McCourt was eleven, his father abandoned the family leaving Frank's mother to raise four children. After quitting school at age thirteen, Frank alternated between odd jobs and petty crime in an effort to feed himself, his mother, and three surviving brothers, Malachy, Michael, and Alphonsus (Alphie). Three of the seven children died of diseases aggravated by malnutrition and the squalor of their surroundings. Frank McCourt himself nearly died of
typhoid fever when he was ten. McCourt describes an entire block of houses sharing a single outhouse, ground floor dwellings flooded by constant rain, and a home infested with rats and vermin.
At the age of nineteen, he returned to the United States where, after a stint working in New York City's Biltmore Hotel, he was drafted and sent to Germany. Upon his discharge from the army, he returned to New York City where he held a series of jobs. Frustrated with his lot in life, he used the GI Bill to enroll in New York University, from which he ultimately graduated. After receiving a Masters degree from Brooklyn College in 1967, he taught English at McKee High School and Stuyvesant High School in New York City (where he joined the American Federation of Teachers). At first he had trouble teaching, because his students were unruly and disobedient. But eventually Frank McCourt became a very
experienced teacher. He ended his teaching career after thirty years.

'Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish
childhood', so writes Frank McCourt in his Pulitzer Prize winning novel. This is a story of extreme poverty and hardship that is not for the faint hearted. Indeed it sometimes traverses the line between entertainment and enlightenment. - Angela's Ashes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

- Author Frank McCourt moved to Litchfield County a few years after he won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for his first book ``Angela's Ashes.¿ He bought a converted 1850s barn, overlooking a pond, on 24 acres in Roxbury. He lives there with his wife Ellen. McCourt wrote his first bestseller when he was in his 60s not long after retiring from a 27-year career as a teacher in the New York City schools. It spent more than three years on the New York Times bestsellers lists and sold nearly 6 million copies in North America alone.

"F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives. I think I've proved him wrong. And all because I refused to settle for a one-act existence, the 30 years I taught English in various New York City high schools."
Frank McCourt was already retired when he published his first book at age 66. Angela's Ashes, a memoir of his impoverished boyhood in Limerick, Ireland, shot to the top of the best-seller lists and remained there for over a year. Angela's Ashes won McCourt the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. It was still topping the paperback lists when McCourt's second book 'Tis hit the bookstores, and the best-seller lists.
"After retiring from teaching I wanted a second act, not a rocker in Florida," McCourt says. After a lifetime of helping young people find their own voices, Frank McCourt has found his own, and millions of readers have found a friend to treasure. - St Aidens ~ Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
