Franz Porcelain Fine China

Ranked #4,209 in Home & Garden, #50,847 overall

the most beautiful porcelain in the world!

Breathtaking only begins to describe the exquisite detail and design that goes into each and every piece of this fabulous China. One day I decided that I just had to own at least one piece for myself. It literally took me three days to narrow my selection down - and even then I still ended up with two! If I were rich, every corner of my house would be filled with this artwork. Every teacup in my kitchen, every plate, bowl and serving platter would come from a different collection and, without a doubt, my jewelry collection would be marked "fragile" and "handle with care," should it ever need to be moved. From spoons to vases, necklaces and earrings, I would have China cabinets and jewelry boxes bursting with flowers, frogs, birds, panda bears, bamboo, and fish. I would even collect the salt and pepper shakers - and I don't use salt and pepper!

Exotic Porcelain

It is common knowledge that the master artisan behind Franz porcelain is Francis Chen but, people might be surprised to learn that many of the collections that he has created were designed by supermodel Kathy Ireland. Of her collections, my favorite is Peacock Luminescence. With the help and guidance of legendary ceramic artist Chao Sun, the pieces in this collection, and all of the others the others, are truly phenomenal.

Tropical Beauty Hibiscus

Another of my favorite collections by Kathy Ireland is this tropical set that makes one feel as if they are relaxing on a secluded beach being served fruity drinks with umbrellas by hunky men in Hawaiian print shorts.

Types of Porcelain

There are three types of porcelain: hard-paste, soft-paste and bone China.

Hard-paste porcelain is grey when wet and, because it is so dense, it is fired at temperatures ranging from 900-1400 degrees C, depending on the desired finish. To make your own hard-paste, you need to create a mixture that is 50% china clay, 30% china stone and 20% flint.

Soft-paste porcelain is more granular than hard-paste because the ingredients aren't melted together when it is fired. The firing temperatures range from 1050 - 1300 degrees C and it is made by mixing white clay with a substance called frit: a mixture of white sand, gypsum, soda, salt, alum and nitre.

Bone China, the most highly prized of all porcelains, is hard-paste porcelain with bone ash mixed into it. It is made using a mixture that is 50% animal bone, 25% China clay and 25% China stone. It is fired twice: first at 1200-1300 degrees C and then again at 1050 - 1100 degrees.

The Faces of Franz Porcelain

Searching for a kitchen to live in as she please,
It's through tiny keyholes that this Little Fairie squeezes.
She'll hide amongst your china, until you turn your back,
Be careful of the Little Fairie, for mischief is her knack!

She watches pots boil over, distracting you with ease,
Changing your favorite recipes, if she so does please.
This Little Fairie can be sneaky- for when you think she's gone,
You might spot her in the cupboards, early in the dawn

Sometimes napping in your teacups, or wandering to and fro,
Making it her comfy home, and happy doing so.
Your kitchen will be cozy, the true heart of your home,
When visited by a fairie, you will never be alone!

Jean Boggio for Franz

Jungle Mania

'Jungle', English word, derived from Hindi; 1796. 'Occurs in countries subject to monsoon conditions, very thick, luxuriant vegetation, where tall grasses combine with ferns, bamboo and palm trees to create a verdant tangle'
Taken from the Larousse dictionnaire de la langue française

Nature dressed up to the nines

It's possible to like the natural world for its raw, unpolished quality, but we can also prefer it under a more delicate, elegant guise, with more than just a touch of the original and the surprising about it. Jean Boggio for Franz is particularly attached to this jungle that is so mysterious and unpredictable. Treated with care and delicacy, it becomes benevolent, a giver of life. The 2010 collection takes its guiding inspiration from the natural world and all that is elegant. Certain items of furniture that have become 'must-have products', such as the 'Incredible Garden' folding screen, have been reinvented, all the better to take us by surprise!
The latter has been transformed into an enormous Jungle door that stands 3 meters high! This is furniture that will stand the test of time, furniture at home with high class living!

As for the interiors, walls are clad with outsized porcelain panels. Pure jet matte black or immaculate white, nothing is too beautiful - or too mad - not even a bathtub completely covered in bisque - a riot of palm trees, lianas and bamboo. Simple lines bring out to great effect the characteristics of the materials used and accentuate the contrasts between textures.

Culture Clash

Here we have a nod to the 80s with ultra-loud colors that contrast wildly with previous collections. A big bang of precious materials evokes the spirit of haute couture and dreamlike adventures à la Lewis Carol or Tim Burton, all brought together in a collection that's the work of an artist who's a rebel as much as a dreamer.
The decor is both exotic and theatrical, the furniture offer us tales that would be worthy of the world of Alice in Wonderland, recounted with humor and color.
Console tables and desks aim for brightness. Meanwhile, clothed in a coat of orange and scarlet porcelain, the 'Lucky' console table stakes its claim on fashion in the most joyful, elegant way imaginable! Explosions of color rock wall hangings and other accessories, bringing a blend of poetic, surrealist shades to silks that shimmer in a kaleidoscope of a thousand lights.
It's goodbye to sensible shades and hello to wackier colors, multiple tones and mixes. JBFF furniture has become more varied and subtle than ever before.

Jungle Vanitas

'Love and Peace', 'Love for Eternity', 'Liberty' ... like so many love sonnets and poems for peace, these sentiments are to be found upon fabrics, head scarves and bags, with Jean Boggio for Franz's jungle mania offering new interpretations and fresh visions. This is one way for JBFF to construct a world suspended between fantasy and dreams, to create a most remarkable cabinet of curiosities. With iconic motifs, heavy with meaning and pregnant with hope, this is interior design nailing its humanist colors to the mast!
Having more in common with Warhol's 'skulls' rather than the Memento mori of Ancient Rome, 'Love for Eternity' features accessories adorned with screen printed skulls, symbolizing the quest for freedom.

This year, the Jean Boggio for Franz collection takes us on a journey through a masterfully staged world of dreams. A décor of addictive motifs imparts a mysterious aura. Pop Culture, memories of the eighties ... colors galore, going right to the heart of what JBFF is. Creations toy with space, juggle materials and play with colors, setting out the riches of imagination in all its splendor%u2026 Welcome to a luxury goods name that will bewitch you like no other ...

Affording fine China can be tough sometimes, which is why I love the fact that Franz makes small bits of beauty. Earrings, necklaces and brooches - the jewelry is just gorgeous. I own two of their pieces: Butterfly & Daffodil and Shamrock Flower; and I can tell you that they are even more beautiful on than they are in pictures. Any woman: mother, daughter, girlfriend, grandmother, wife, would be thrilled to get a Franz porcelain necklace, brooch or pair of earrings as a gift. Their incredible beauty makes them perfect for wearing to weddings, graduations, proms and other special events, or even to the office or on a hot date.
