Must Buy Book of the Month

Ignore Everybody: and 39 Other Keys to Creativity

I read this book in two days, I have never read a book that fast but I couldn't put it down. Hugh MacLeod has a different style of writing, concise to the point, I like it. Paired with the hysterical cartoons he draws on the back of business cards (included in every chapter) it makes for a very interesting read. If you are some what artistic and are trying to do your own thing in life you must read this book. It is THAT good. Any creative person out there can get a lot from this book. You can also follow Hugh on Twitter (@gapingvoid) and check him out on his now famous blog http://gapingvoid.com/.

How to Set Goals

Setting goals is common practice in the workplace, at least it should be. Goals give us something to shoot for, to strive towards, to try and achieve, they give our day to day a focus. They should be a major part of any organization and great managers know how powerful they can be for their employees. This is why it is so important to set SMART goals, not just goals. What do I mean you ask?

SMART goals stands for:

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timely

Specific goals are down to the point, anyone could read it and understand exactly what you want to achieve, if you can give it to your Grandmother and she understands what you are shooting for, then your goal is specific.

Measurable goals have a metric attached to them. Get in the habit of having a measurement piece attached to your goals and at a predetermined time sit down and see where you stack up. This will make your goals setting much more valuable in the future.

Achievable goals are within your reach. Any goal should be a challenge, large or small but for most of your goal setting you should make the end result attainable. Yes there are such things called BHAG's (Big, hairy, audacious, goals) but these are the big picture, the long shots you are striving for, shoot for the stars and if you hit the moon on your way you have succeeded. For the rest of your goals make sure you can get there.

Realistic goals are related to what you actually want to accomplish. Setting goals that will help you get to where you want to be in a few years. Set out your life path for the next five years and create milestones (goals) or realistic points along the way so you know how you are doing.

Timely goals are a difficult one, next time you set a goal, and every time from now on attach a deadline to the goal. Pretty simple hey? But most people don't. It will hold you more accountable and make for an easier measurement piece as well. There is no point in setting a goal I have a life time to achieve, thats called a bucket list.

I hope this goal setting helps you. Personally the more focused I am the better I work and the better quality of work I do. The way to stay focused is to have a goal, have small goals, start with writing down what you want to accomplish for the day and measure it. Move to a week then a month and all of a sudden you have an unbelievable habit of goal setting formed, it will help you more than you think.
There is no one that got anywhere in this World without a goal in mind.

Does Your Mission Statement Suck?

Mission, vision, goal setting and strategic objectives are by no means easy aspects of your business to tackle. Most are decided on by boards or committee's that dilute the true meaning of the business. This video has to do with mission statements but the idea can be applied to the other aspects of your high level strategy. So stop writing boring mission statements!
