How to Set Goals
SMART goals stands for:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timely
Specific goals are down to the point, anyone could read it and understand exactly what you want to achieve, if you can give it to your Grandmother and she understands what you are shooting for, then your goal is specific.
Measurable goals have a metric attached to them. Get in the habit of having a measurement piece attached to your goals and at a predetermined time sit down and see where you stack up. This will make your goals setting much more valuable in the future.
Achievable goals are within your reach. Any goal should be a challenge, large or small but for most of your goal setting you should make the end result attainable. Yes there are such things called BHAG's (Big, hairy, audacious, goals) but these are the big picture, the long shots you are striving for, shoot for the stars and if you hit the moon on your way you have succeeded. For the rest of your goals make sure you can get there.
Realistic goals are related to what you actually want to accomplish. Setting goals that will help you get to where you want to be in a few years. Set out your life path for the next five years and create milestones (goals) or realistic points along the way so you know how you are doing.
Timely goals are a difficult one, next time you set a goal, and every time from now on attach a deadline to the goal. Pretty simple hey? But most people don't. It will hold you more accountable and make for an easier measurement piece as well. There is no point in setting a goal I have a life time to achieve, thats called a bucket list.
I hope this goal setting helps you. Personally the more focused I am the better I work and the better quality of work I do. The way to stay focused is to have a goal, have small goals, start with writing down what you want to accomplish for the day and measure it. Move to a week then a month and all of a sudden you have an unbelievable habit of goal setting formed, it will help you more than you think.
There is no one that got anywhere in this World without a goal in mind.
