Fraud Alert - What does the term mean?
What is an initial fraud alert?
An initial fraud alert can be placed on your credit report if you suspect you have been, or are about to be, a victim of identity theft.
Issuing an initial fraud alert is also appropriate if your wallet has been stolen or if you've been taken in by a "phishing" scam.
With an initial fraud alert, potential creditors must use what the law refers to as "reasonable policies and procedures" to verify your identity before issuing credit in your name.
That said, it is important to note that the steps potential creditors take to verify your identity may not always alert them that the applicant is not you.
Please note that when you place an initial fraud alert on your credit report, you're entitled to order one free credit report from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.
Finally if you make an advance request you can ensure that only the last four digits of your Social Security number will appear on your credit reports.

How to file an identity theft report
In a nutshell, an Identity Theft Report is a detailed police report. It includes enough detail about the crime for the credit reporting companies and the businesses involved to verify that you are a victim-and to know which accounts and inaccurate information came from identity theft.
In many cases an automated Identity Theft Report, such as the printed ID Theft Complaint available from via .... should be sufficient to obtain an extended fraud alert.

Furthermore, the consumer reporting companies will remove your name from marketing lists for pre-screened credit offers for five years unless you ask them to put your name back on the list before then.
Pre-Paid Legal & Kroll Partners in the Identity Theft Protection Business
Did you know that in 2003, Pre-Paid Legal entered into a joint marketing agreement with risk-consulting company Kroll, Inc.? This partnership allows Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. to market Kroll's Identity Theft Shield to consumers.

Previously Kroll had only developed products for large corporations and didn't have a sales force geared towards individual consumers.
With Prepaid Legal's Identity Theft Shield plan you are given a credit report upon enrollment which is monitored on a daily basis. Activity notices are then sent to you via email, postal mail, or by telephone.
Furthermore should a theft of identity occurs while you are enrolled as a member of the plan, Kroll will provide you with its identity restoration service via a limited power of attorney.
The Identity Theft Shield may be purchased alongside a a pre-paid legal plan or can be acquired separately.
Unlike other legal plans which require associates to hold insurance licenses in some states, Pre-Paid Legal's Identity Theft Shield is classified as a service product in all states and provinces in which they are offered. It is important to note that because of this classification new associates operating in what is referred to as a "license state", have the freedom to sell the Identity Theft Shield until they obtain their license from the state's Department of Insurance.
