He started his career in vaudeville in 1905 with his sister Adele.
In 1917 Fred and Adele made it to Broadway in the show Over The Top.
He didn't make it to Hollywood until 1933 when appeared as himself dancing with Joan Crawford in the successful musical film Dancing Lady.

His stage and subsequent film career spanned a total of 76 years, during which he made 31 musical films. He is particularly associated with Ginger Rogers, with whom he made ten films.

Beyond film and television, many classical dancers and choreographers, Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Jerome Robbins among them, also acknowledged his importance and influence.
He was named the fifth Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film Institute.
