Freddy Krueger & Jason Voorhees: Best Friends Forever

You may not know this, but Freddy Kruger and Jason Voorhees have been best friends (forever!) since they were in diapers. True story.

This lens is a tribute to their friendship complete with notes, photographs and all that rot. Get your tissues ready. This is a story of true friendship, folks.

So How Did Freddy & Jason Meet?

Freddy and Jason met in preschool. Hard to believe these two crazy guys ever went to preschool, isn't it? But they did.

At first, they weren't friends at all. *gasp* It all began one day during their regularly scheduled play time. Jason was playing with the building blocks, building something that looked eerily like a large chainsaw. As little Jason Voorhees was bent over, putting the chain on his saw, Freddy, seeing a perfect opportunity to cause trouble, snuck up behind Jason and slashed his diaper with one of his wee blades (because they were still very wee at this point - think Swiss Army finger blades).

Jason, of course, dissolved into a fit of tears (he's a huge crybaby after all), but despite his whining, that little prank led to Freddy and Jason's lifelong friendship.

Freddy and Jason: The High School Years

Every friendship has its ups and downs and Freddy and Jason's friendship is no exception. High school was a trying time for them. With Freddy's acne and Jason's ADD, it seemed that they were destined for high school trouble.

But low and behold, both Freddy and Jason were extremely popular. Freddy was the head of Glee Club and Jason was a star football player. All was going well until Homecoming of senior year.

When both were nominated for Homecoming King.

It seemed okay at first. A pat on the back and "I hope you win, Freddy!" or "I'm rootin' for you, Jason!"

But secretly, Freddy and Jason are both very competitive individuals and this was the first time they had really been in direct competition.

The trouble really began when Jason asked a girl by the name of Regan (who bore a striking resemblance to Linda Blair) to the Homecoming Dance.

Freddy saw this as a betrayal on Jason's part because they had spent many nights in Jason's garage discussing how Freddy and Regan would get married one day and have pretty little green ugly babies (it really makes sense, I promise).

In order to insure that Jason didn't become homecoming king, Freddy infiltrated the dreams of all the voters and threatened to kill them if they didn't vote for him. Despite Jason's protests that Freddy had cheated, Freddy became homecoming queen.

But Jason got laid.

Who came out on top? You tell me. Or ask Regan.

Freddy & Jason During The 80s: Makin' Up Is Hard To Do

The "betrayal" (as Freddy liked to call it) continued to drive a rift between Freddy and Jason and this continued into the 80s.

Many times, Freddy and Jason had shared dreams of Hollywood glory. And in the 80s, after another one of their classmates, Michael Myers, had struck gold with a series of slasher films, they decided to take their chances with the genre.

Jason hit pay dirt first with the Friday the 13th Series. It wasn't until the 3rd film, however, that Jason was able to show his true face as the producers thought the hockey mask was just a little too sporty and jockish. Nevermind that Jason was a jock!

This only spurred Freddy on in his quest to seek fame and fortune and soon, Freddy was the star of his own slasher series, Nightmare on Elm Street.

Despite running into each other on occasion in West Hollywood and having some of the same contacts, Freddy and Jason's rivalry continued through the 80s.

Freddy's Alcoholism Brings Jason and Freddy Back Together

In the mid-90s, with his star fading, Freddy turned to alcohol and found himself struggling from falling into deeper despair.

Finally, overcoming his pride, he put a phone call into his old friend Jason Voorhees and found that, despite old rivalries, Jason was still his BFF.

Jason helped Freddy get sober and the two resolved never to let petty differences get in the way of their friendship again.

Together Again: Freddy Vs. Jason

With Freddy now sober, Jason and Freddy decided that it would be fun to join creative forces and make a movie together.

In 2003, Freddy Vs. Jason was released in theaters. Despite the fact that it was panned by critics and most movie-goers who were awake for the duration of the film, Jason and Freddy still hailed it as a victory if nothing more than the fact that it than it allowed them to cause mischief together again. Just like the days when Freddy would slash Jason's diaper open.

So What Have We Learned From This, Kiddies?

That just because you're a maniacal, homicidal villain doesn't mean that you don't crave friendship.

And that if you slash your friend's diaper open with your finger blades, you might get baby poo on your blade.

Very cool! Fanfic in a Squidoo lens! Love the idea of both of them being monsters from the get go. If Freddy got drunk back then I can only hope the remake won't make him kill himself. Blessed!
