Frederick Arthur Bridgman was born in the southern state of Alabama, the son of a Bostonian doctor prior to the civil war. After witnessing the slave markets as a child, Bridgman became an anti-colonialist. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and shortly after went to work for the American Banknote Company. Unhappy with this direction, Bridgman won a grant which allowed him to travel to Paris where he studied art under Jean Léon Gérôme.
Bridgman made his first trips east in the 1870's and 80's, traveling to Algeria and Egypt. His Paris studios were filled with souvenirs from his voyages and he dressed himself in Oriental costume. Bridgman married Flornce Mott Baker, daughter of a wealthy American family which allowed him the luxury of not having to sell his paintings though he continued to paint daily. As an amateur photographer, Bridgman worked primarily from his own photographs.

Frederick Arthur Bridgman (November 10, 1847-1928) was an American artist, born in Tuskegee, Alabama. Bridgman was the son of a doctor, and became among the United States' most familiar and esteemed artists. He became recognised as among the world's most gifted Orientalist painters.
He started as a draftsman in New York City, for the American Bank Note Company during 1864-1865, and was educated in art in this time with the Brooklyn Art Association and also at the National Academy of Design; however he traveled to Paris in 1866 and would become a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme. Paris then grew to be his headquarters. A visit to Egypt during 1873-1874 led to paintings of the East that drew in quick attention, and his great and significant piece, The Funeral Procession of a Mummy on the Nile, in the Paris Salon, purchased by James Gordon Bennett, landed him the Cross of the Legion of Honor.
During 1867, Bridgman went in the studio of the illustrious academic artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, as he became profoundly molded by Gérôme's accurate draftsmanship, fluid finishes, and interest for Middle-Eastern scenes. Bridgman later even become titled "the American Gérôme." Not a simple imitator, all the same, Bridgman would afterward assume a further realistic touch, accenting brilliant colors and aesthetic brushwork.
Bridgman took his initial visit to North Africa between 1872 and 1874, splitting his time from Algeria and Egypt. Here he accomplished about three hundred studies, that would become the origin material for many following oil paintings. More travels to to the area throughout the 1870s and 1880s enabled him to accumulate a collection of costumes, architectural bits, and pieces of art that frequently appear in his art works. Humorously, John Singer Sargent marked that Bridgman's packed studio, as well as the Eiffel Tower, embodied Paris's must-see attractions. Although Bridgman retained a lifetime association with France, his popularity in America never declined. So, in 1890, the painter gave a one-man exhibit of more than four hundred pictures in New York's 5th Avenue art gallery. Once the show proceeded to Chicago's Art Institute, it held only three hundred pieces - stating to the good volume of sales Bridgman had earned.
