Frederick Franck - Artist, Writer, Genuine Human Being
Welcome to this page honoring my number one hero: FREDERICK FRANCK.
I first learned about Frederick Franck while taking a drawing class at the Indianapolis Art Center based on the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. The last chapter in the book was about Zen seeing and talked about Frederick Franck, the artist, who had written a book called 'Zen Seeing, Zen Drawing'. I read that book and many others written by him and his thinking changed the way I saw.
Amazing how life works!

Who Was Frederick Franck?
Spiritual artist, writer, and amazing human being.

Born on the Dutch/Belgian/German border (in the Netherlands) in 1909, Franck witnessed the beginning of World War I at the age of 5. With childhood memories of seeing refugees crossing Holland's border, he began his lifelong search asking what it means to be human.
He was raised agnostic, however, the powerful imagery of the Catholic Church in that area of Holland had a profound affect on him. The fish, often a symbol of Christ, is one of the images Franck used often in his art. He refers to it as "Cosmic Fish" and includes human faces as the scales.
Professionally trained as a dentist, he had the opportunity to work with one of his mentors, Albert Schweitzer, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and known for his philosophy of 'reverence for life'. Franck studied Zen Buddhism in England during World War II, and Zen scholar Daisetz Suzuki, became another of his mentors.
His third and possibly most influential mentor was Pope John XXIII. Franck had the opportunity to draw the Pope and all sessions of the Vatican Council in the early 60's. He saw the Pope as having that authentic, original face - free of ego.
The property at his home in Warwick, NY has been preserved as a trans-religious sanctuary called Pacem in Terris, meaning "peace on earth", which combines a natural setting with Franck's sculptures and a building for musical performances and sectarian services.
Franck is known as a painter, sculptor, and author with more than 30 books published on Buddhism, drawing, and what it means to be human. His most successful was "The Zen of Seeing", published in 1972 and still in print.

The Difference between Looking and Seeing
In his book,' Zen Seeing, Zen Drawing', Franck describes the difference between looking and seeing.
"Looking and seeing both begin with sense perception, but there the similarity ends. When I "look" at the world and label its phenomena, I make immediate choices, instant appraisals. I like or I dislike. I accept or I reject...... The purpose of looking is to survive, to cope, to manipulate, to discern what enhances or diminishes the "me". When I see I am suddenly all eyes. I forget the ME, and am liberated from it and dive into the reality of what confronts me.... It is in order to see, ... more deeply that I draw.... I have learned that what I have not drawn I have never really seen..... I discover that among the ten thousand things there is no ordinary thing."

Where is Pacem in Terris?
Warwick, New York
I would highly recommend visiting this place, with the understanding that it is a sanctuary. The sculptures seen throughout the property are considered "icons" - meaning windows to the sacred.
From their latest newsletter, they report a comment from one recent visitor. "Thank you so much for maintaining this small Oasis in a sea of aggression, suffering and environmental destruction."
The address is 96 Covered Bridge Road, Warwick, NY 10990. It is only open May through September weekends (when the flag is flying). Call (845) 986-4329.

- I have been visiting Pacem in Terris since the early 1970's. I try to visit at least once a year. I grew up in West Milford, NJ, so it was close then. Now I live in Randolph, NJ but I still make the trip because it is so tranquil and relaxing. Mr. Franck has created an oasis for us and I am so thankful to him and his wife for the wonderful place. Please keep it open for us to visit. Thank you for so many years of a place to go to hear nature and quiet.

- Thanks, Donna, for writing as someone else who has visited Pacem in Terris. I was just a visitor too. I have no other connection to the place.
