Fred-is-Peace a design in honor of Fred Manor

When I began to research a design for a Christmas card last year, I discovered that my father's name, Fred, means peace in three Scandanavian languages. Fred-is-Peace is a calligraphic design in many languages. It is also a bit of genealogical research, for I tried to include the languages of my ancestors in it.  In addition, I reached out to my circle of friends, who are like family to me, including their heritage as well.  Finally, I thought of my neighbors who come from a truly diverse number of areas and tried to think of what languages were needed to complete that circle. I do believe that Peace is truly a universal desire of the human heart. Join me in honoring, celebrating and sharing this desire with those whom you love through this design.  Contents of this lens are copyright 2006-2008 by Marguerite Manor. All rights reserved.

More About Fred Manor's Service in World War II

My father served in the United States Navy in the Pacific on the USS Shea, DM-30, a Robert H. Smith class
minesweeper, which was built at Bethlehem Steel in New York and commissioned on September 30, 1944.
I still have the ticket which Papa had for that ceremony and a framed picture of the Shea, which I have assumed
was given to him at that time. She steamed through the Panama Canal and out into the Pacific Ocean, stopping
at Hawaii very briefly and arrived in the South Pacific in time to join the fierce fighting of the spring of 1945.

The battle, which was fought on May 4, 1945 nearly destroyed the little ship and she was sent home for repairs.
By the time that they traversed the Panama Canal and steamed into the Atlantic the war in Europe was over. The
Shea made it home to Norfolk Navy Yard with lights on and fresh air streaming in the open portholes.

Mementoes Honoring Fred Manor's Service in World War II

At the death of a veteran every family is entitled to a flag for his or her funeral. The flag in the case is my father's, given to our family in 1999 when he died. The framed picture is the Shea, the destroyer/minelayer or "tin can" that Papa served on and the Purple Heart was his, awarded for the battle which nearly sank the ship. His physical wound was minor, but I believe the psychological scars were not.

Garden for Peace
What if every single one of us with even just a little bit of land planted a garden of vegetables, herbs and flowers this summer? What if churches, community centers and schools joined in? What if instead of expensive landscaping, large companies planted gardens and donated the produce to local food

Papa's Chess Board and Pieces

Chess was one of Papa's avocations. A neighbor taught him to play by as he often said, "beating me at it until I was as good as he was." The friend who taught him had had polio and used crutches. There was nothing wrong with his mind! The chess board is one that Papa's grandfather made for him and it is one of my most cherished possessions partly for its beauty and partly for the associations. One of Papa's chess sets fit nicely into the the cafepress tile box that bears the design, Fred-is-Peace, that I have made in his honor.
