Why I Write Poetry

Even though through much of my life I have had good friends, I didn't feel the need to spill my inner most details with them. I felt throwing many of my personal problems at them would possibly harm our friendship or possibly even make them feel less about me.

Since the society around me spread the lie of "diaries and journals are for women", I believed it. I didn't want to have others find the diary and spread the juicy details of my life to others. I have siblings, and sometimes siblings do what siblings do.

Instead, I turned to poetry.

About Writing Poetry

Pencil eraser in front of booksNo, I haven't won major awards in poetry. Actually, I don't even bother to try. The poetry I write is for myself. It is to vent my frustrations with life or to spread the love I feel moment-to-moment. It's a way for me to express myself without worry about others weird or chaotic response. Sometimes, it is even to--shock--have fun.

This works for me, so it should work for you as well. It doesn't hurt to try, right? So do it!

My Poems

Gary R. Hess is me

Most of these poems are on the old side. I wrote most of them while still in high school (almost a decade ago). They probably aren't nearly as good as my recent poems--which I haven't shared online.

If you wish to read them, here are a few:
Patriotic poetry
Poems on break ups
Poetry about friends
Poetry to make you laugh
Poems about long distance relationships and love
Miscellaneous poetry
Poems that are sad

You can find the rest here: PoemOfQuotes. There are a few within the articles section and the place called "Holiday poems", if you can find it.

Actually, there are a few "newer" poems on the site. They just tend to be more on the humorous or crazy side.

Poetry Supplies

Sometimes I don't feel like writing in a notebook or on my computer, so instead I use a fancy little notepad. If you are looking to keep your poems secret from everyone, you might want to try something like this.
