Google own Blogger. Therefore, Blogger blogs tend to rank well and gain traffic from Google. Period.

Plus, their interface is easy to work with, feature-filled and an excellent way to get started blogging.

Your free blog will take the format of blogname.blogspot.com, but you do have options of either transferring a domain name to Blogger's host, or by having the blog hosted at your own web server. Ideally, hosting your own blog is the best option, but if you really want to start a free blog, then using the blogspot hosting is the route for you.

You can add Adsense very easily to a free Blogger blog, so at least you can start monetizing your free blog straight away. Be careful with your content, though. Because your blog is on Google's servers, they don't take kindly to having junk content added, and may ban your account, or even delete your blog if they think there is anything that resembles spam on your blog.

Wordpress is the favourite if you are serious about your blogging efforts. Again, there are 2 options.

You could have blogname.wordpress.com, or you can install the Wordpress software onto your own host and operate it independently.

If you're just starting with blogging, then try a wordpress.com hosted blog first, although you can't monetize it at all. Any affiliate links or adverts on your blog will tend to get it deleted, but view your free blog as training.

Your ideal solution will be to host your own Wordpress blog on your own server, so you can add plugins, monetization, affiliate links and more.
