Book Swapping, Review Books and Other Great Ways to Get Books for Free

Getting books for free seems like a too-good-to-be-true fairytale. Actually I've explored a number of ways to get free books. It's true, there are ways to stock your bookshelves and never run out of something new to read. The best part is you can do this for free. For good measure, I'll throw in some ways to get almost free books.

Sure you can borrow books from a library, but many booklovers want to keep their books. Eventually the bookshelves overflow, but the true bibliophile still wants more books. This addiction to books and reading becomes expensive.

BookCrossing

A rather random way to get free books

BookCrossing is a movement encouraging people to free their books from the bookshelf and to leave them in public places for other readers to find and enjoy. You can join at www.bookcrossing.com and start logging in the books your are releasing. By posting where you put the book ("in the wild" is the term used), then other BookCrossers can find it. Actually anyone can pick up the book and keep it. The BookCrosser puts a label in the book saying that it is free and you can keep the book or pass it along after you read it.

Book Reviewers Get Free Books from Publishers and Authors

When you reach the top levels of reviewing on Amazon, people start to offer you books. When I was a top 100 reviewer, this happened to me. Now that I've dropped down to the 200 level, the offers have dropped off.

Bloggers who specialize in book reviewing and build up a large following will also get free books given to them to review in their blog.

If you want to become a book reviewer, here are several books to get you started.

BookMooch - Swap Your Books with Them

BookMooch
This is another book swapping site. You list books you have. If someone requests one, you mail it to them and get points. Once you have enough points, you can request books too from others on the site. All it costs you is the postage.

This is an international site, but you can opt out of sending books overseas if you want to avoid the expense of mailing abroad.

SWAP.com (books, video games, CDs, movies)

Here's my experience with Swap

I liked the idea that Swap (formerly Swaptree) could search its members and arrange a three-way trade so each of us got the book we had listed on on WANT LIST. There were no points to keep track of and all I had to do was pay for the postage to mail out the book I was swapping. Update: There is now a small fee charged for each swap to cover administrative costs. Since I was already a member, my charge per swap is 25 cents.

To start out, I listed a few titles I wanted and a few that I had to swap. In my first trade, I sent an Ann Rule paperback to someone in New Jersey. They sent their book to someone in Mississippi, who then sent the book I requested to me in Florida. I loved the book, Riding the Bus with My Sister, but now I've finished it and can add it to the HAVE LIST to get a new trade.

The more books you list, the more likely that you will get one you want.

There's no balancing out of hardback vs paperback or original value of the book. If you think you have a valuable book, then don't swap it on Swaptree, sell it on eBay.

I'm both a BCer and a BMer (hehe Bookcrosser and Bookmoocher). Every since I joined (years and years ago), I amassed such a great number of books that now I don't know where to put them - literally! For a bookworm like me, these places are like heaven (and yeah, Bookcrossing is not only for leaving your books outdoors or in other places, but also to trade books with other BCers).
    Great lens, liked it.

Since I work in a large library, I get a lot of free prepubs. (LOVE prepubs.) I'd also add the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for children under the age of 5. Library Thing offers free prepubs. The Friends of the Library often sell books for 25-50 cents each... so almost free... and often give away free books, too. Eligible school and library districts can get free books from RIF which they pass along to children in their districts.
