The War of the Worlds is most well known for the widespread panic caused when an adaptation of the book was dramatized by Orson Wells over the radio on Halloween 1938. Because of the style of the work, which is written as a first hand narration by a journalist of the invasion of the Earth by Martians, and because it was aired without commercials, apparently many people believed the events were actually taking place - we were really being invaded by Mars! Since then there have been more radio, film, and even video games based on the book. Now you can read the original - for free!

I've also included one biography of Charles Dickens which is also free. As you may know, if you've read any Charles Dickens, he doesn't glorify the times he lived in and some of his books might be a little dark for your children.
