The ICDL is an award-winning website that brings you free ebooks from around the world. Read them in English or practice reading with your foreign language skills. For teachers and homeschooling parents, there are ideas for ways to extend the stories into writing and other creative activities. Search through the thousands of books in their collections by grade level, genre, subject, language, and several other criteria. The only drawback: the books cannot be downloaded; they must be read online at the ICDL website. Public Library eBooks
All formats Grades K-12
Check out a free ebook online with your library card, if your local public library offers this service. To see if they do, go to OverDrive.com and type in your zip code. Libraries that use Overdrive's ebook subscription services for loaning books will be listed. You must go the the library's website and log in as a registered patron to check out ebooks, usually available for a week or two before they expire from your ereader. If your city's library does not offer this service, it might be worthwhile to pay for a non-resident card at a major city's library service. Look to see how extensive that city's ebook collection for young readers is, to know if the cost will be worth it. Children's Storybooks Online
Children's Storybook Online has a nice selection of original illustrated stories for K-5 children. Among them are several read aloud stories, that are especially useful for beginning readers. Like the ICDL books, you cannot download them. Read them online only. Do you read free ebooks?
