Presentation

1. Start the lesson off by reading the new language section on page 14 and 15. You may wish to play the recording.
2. Then give emphasis on the top five free-time activities for teenagers in the yellow box on page 15.
3. This time, ask the students to raise their right hand if they like certain activity.
4. Give the students a chance to ask for clarification of anything they don't understand.
5. Then go around and use the practice section to ask the students.
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- Do you like to do homework? Etc.

6. Then go to the true or false questions at the comprehension section on page 15. Make sure everyone understand the lesson.

7. Fun activity. Have some fun activity.

"Do You Like (This Sport)?"

At this point, it is expected that students can understand and produce "What (in this category) do you like?" - "I like (this)."

-The teacher should be able to point to the sports on the board and and have volunteer students respond appropriately to the question, "What sport do you like?"
-After 2 or 3 students respond appropriately, saying "I like (a sport)," the teacher can introduce the more grammatically complicated question, "Do you like (this sport)?"
-First, the students should be able to pronounce the question. Prompting them to first repeat, for example "Do you like basketball?" perhaps the best way to explain the grammar is by translating the question into the students' native language.
-The two appropriate responses, "Yes, I do," and "No, I don't," should be translated and explained in a similar manner.
-The students repeat "Yes, I do," and "No, I don't," with a nod or a shake of the head, as appropriate. The two responses lend themselves well to a chant: "Yes, I do. No, I don't. Yes, I do. No, I don't." The teacher establishes a rhythm, and the students chant along.
Conversation Practice
-The teacher chooses a sport from the board and asks the class, "Do you like baseball?" for example.
-Students raise their hands, and one volunteer is chosen.
-The student volunteer stands, and the class asks together, "Do you like baseball?"
-The volunteer answers honestly "Yes, I do," or "No, I don't."
-The class repeats the volunteer's response.
-The student receives the card after answering appropriately, and the distribution process continues through the remaining sports.
Ideally, the students should say "Thank you," upon receiving cards.

8. Reading assignment

Give the pointers for the short test the following week.

- What do you like to do in your free time? I like to play the guitar

10. Then go to the grammar section. Read the grammar and let them repeat after you. Then give them a chance to study for 3 minutes.

11. Give the students a chance to ask for clarification of anything they don't understand.
12. Play infinitive game

Gerund and infinitive game

Preparation:

Print out the sentences, cut them up and paste them onto card. Cover them with transparent sticky-back plastic and then cut out the squares of cardboard. On the back of all of the sentences in red, put a red dot. Put a blue dot on the back of all the blue sentences.

How to play:

Put all of the cards face down on the table. Each student takes a card with a red dot and a card with a blue dot. They then have to make a sentence, choosing whether to use gerund, infinitive or infinitive without 'to'. Any combination of red and blue cards should make a natural sentence, but sometimes the student may have to decide which verb is most appropriate (e.g. 'getting home' v 'going home').

Examples of sentences

Red Blue

We managed see the manager
I need go to São Paulo
They decided write a/the report
You promised tell the truth
He refused go to the meeting
He agreed see me/him
I enjoyed do it.
He avoided go to Brasilia
I remember go there
