I was using this technique heavily, but today I've discovered that this may not be doable anymore, at least not "legally." When I try to create an affiliate link, the "design" option isn't available anymore. Zazzle only generates a large or small image of the design on the product itself.

Thanks for the lens. It helps a lot

Thank you. As a newbie here on Squidoo, I keep stumbling across your lenses as I'm searching for info. Most excellent information. :-) Thanks!

One question: Do you have a couple/three/four examples of "good lenses" that promote Zazzle?
  • Greekgeek May 11, 2012 @ 9:42 pm | delete
That's a great question! Go here for the answer -- I decided it was worth writing a blog post about it. :)

Thank you, for clearing a few issues about the Zazzle affiliate programs and also for the tips on the image templates, i'm sure is going to make it a lot easier for me to create my first lense.

I'm a new Zazzler (and an old Squid!) and this lens clarified a few things about the Zazzle affiliate program for me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Glad I found this. I've been thinking about adding graphics to my blog. I appreciate that you explained about hand-coding for the referrer credit vs. using the Zazzle module. I'm fairly new to affiliate opportunities.
  • fanfreluche Jan 12, 2012 @ 5:41 am | delete
Using a zazzle image as an intro (with a credit and link) is not acceptable then? Since we have to host it. I will need to make some change if that's the case. I need to check back on squidu, there was a discussion some month ago, but I got derailed and miss the final conclusion about this.
  • Greekgeek Mar 29, 2012 @ 2:25 pm | delete
I have seen that SquidU discussion, including a quote from a Zazzle official saying it was okay to do so.

However, I have some reservations. I've seen discussions by Zazzlers who aren't entirely happy with people sharing their graphics without permission, EVEN when we're doing it using Zazzle's embed codes which legally allow affiliates to do that.

So what Zazzle HQ says and what Zazzlers want may be two different things (just as not all Squidoo members are happy with the "Pin It" button allowing our content to be pinned without our permission.)

For that reason, I would err on the side of caution and get permission or contact the artist before uploading their graphic into the introduction module. At least if we use embed codes provided by Zazzle, then, if the artist removes their work, we won't accidentally retain a copy of something we don't have the rights to. (And if we stick to Zazzle's embed codes and don't upload Zazzle images to Squidoo without explicit permission, then we're really and truly covered, legally, although making the artists happy is just as important.)

Excellent lens, Greekgeek! I need to study this in depth so I can improve my Zazzle lenses. One thing ... your Intro makes a reference to Page 2 of the lens; you need to update this.

Terrific lens! Thanks for the helpful explanations. I know there's been quite a discussion recently on the forums about how and when it is acceptable to link to other Zazzlers' designs and products.

Terrific explanations of how to properly use product and design links! Thanks so much for writing this article!
  • MelissaInTheSky Sep 15, 2011 @ 5:08 pm | delete
This is a great lens! Super helpful. I just wanted to clarify, though, about referral codes. Your referral code would normally show as ?rf= followed by your number, no space in between. Above in this article, you mentioned &rf= before the number. That only works if there is something else before it that uses a ? symbol. I know that sounds confusing, but basically it comes down to this.... If you are linking to a page where the URL has no ? in it, then use ?rf= plus your number. If there is already something in the URL address with a ? then you need to add &rf= plus your number. :)

Thank you, folks, for supporting us artists! We love when you use our graphics from Zazzle!
  • Greekgeek Sep 17, 2011 @ 5:41 pm | delete
Melissa, thank you! I've fixed that for clarity: it's just the rf=[number] that people should check for to make sure they've got their affiliate code attached. :)

Thank you for fixing this lens to eliminate confusion! Zazzle has one of the best affiliate programs IMO because you get to choose the designs you promote and there's billions (literally) to choose from. and why not use a graphic that might get you (and the designer) some money if someone likes it? How many times have you seen a graphic on the web and thought, oooooo I'd like to have that on a shirt? Using zazzle graphics means people can! :).
  • bethd821 Mar 20, 2011 @ 6:34 am | delete

I just found this page via a link in the Rocket Mom's Zazzle group and have been studying, reading, drooling :) over this amazing Zazzle page. What you offer here is nothing short of spectacular...thank you, thank you for gifting us all with your expertise. I recently created my own code to display Zazzle items but could not figure out how to line 'em up with a title link underneath...voila, found it here. Plus much, much more. Not only will I be using this page as a constant resource, I'll be sharing it with my friends as well. *Blessed and featured on http://www.squidoo.com/my-angel-wings
  • SanguinLover Mar 19, 2011 @ 12:41 pm | delete
Thank you for making the changes to this lens. The ability to cross promote each other is one of the great things about Zazzle, and I would hate for anyone to abuse the Assoc. program because of misunderstanding your meaning here. There were several earlier comments that gave me pause about how the general public would view it.

Other Zazzlers are familiar with the system, what is and isn't allowed. But the average internet surfer could have, and by the comments below some have, took it to mean that it would be OK to take the Zazzle images and do whatever they wanted with them.

Most people outside of the graphics world are unaware of exactly what a "creative commons" license is. And tend to treat it like public domain. Which could have had the potential for any number of repercussions.

Which was my cause for concern. I am more than willing to be promoted by any and all who wish to, as long as the rules are followed and credit is always given.

Thank you again for taking the time to address this issue and hopefully fix it.
  • Zazzle seller Mar 18, 2011 @ 2:19 pm | delete
Creative commons has nothing to do with ZAZZLE. You can link to a product image sure, but you can not use that image however you like. that's called copyright theft.
  • Greekgeek Mar 18, 2011 @ 4:49 pm | delete
I thought I made it pretty clear in many places on this page that you MUST use Zazzle's affiliate codes, you can't just use the graphics. I've reworded it to make it even more clear.
  • KRWdesigns Mar 18, 2011 @ 1:08 pm | delete
Hello - I really like this lens and think you've done a great job explaining how the Zazzle affiliate program can be useful to people in multiple ways. However, your use of the phrase "Creative Commons" in connection with images at Zazzle is causing a great deal of upset. The title and beginning of this lens give the wrong imapression of the use of images at Zazzle, something shopkeepers like myself already have problem enough with. Is there any way you could please replace that phrase, perhaps say "to spruce up your lens or site" instead of "like Creative Commons"? You give such wonderful detailed directions, that while it may not be your intent, you've made it very easy, too easy, for people to actually just steal our images and use them without a link back at all or any credit given to the artist. Thank you..
  • Greekgeek Mar 18, 2011 @ 4:55 pm | delete
Thanks for the suggestions. Sorry to cause upset in Zazzle forums (which I'm guessing is what's happened).I asked in Zazzle forums before writing this page, and at the time, I had some pro sellers go over it to make sure it satisfied what Zazzle artists wanted. Obviously, I needed to get even more opinions.

I've reworded the introduction and dropped the Creative Commons analogy. Hopefully this will satisfied those who were worried. I certainly do not advocate people taking graphics without permission; I thought my dos and don'ts and step by step tutorials are fairly clear on how to use Zazzle affiliate links properly.

All Creative Commons images ARE copyrighted, by the way: we cannot simply take them; we may only use them in the way the artist or photographer permits us to use them, with credit and a link back! Creative Commons images are copyrighted images with a limited use license... the artist or photographer is exercising copyright by stipulating the limited circumstances under which they may be copied. Zazzle graphics are not Creative Commons, of course, but the Zazzle affiliate program works in a similar fashion.
  • SanguinLover Mar 17, 2011 @ 10:58 pm | delete
As a zazzle artist, I have to say that this lens is extremely misleading! NONE of the designs or art/images on Zazzle are creative common licensed. They are ALL owned and copyright protected by the Zazzle shop keepers. It is illegal to steal any art from sites for personal or commercial use and can get the thief heavy fines or jail time. To tell people that it is OK to do this is wrong. And is NOT what Zazzle intended the Associate program for.
  • Greekgeek Mar 18, 2011 @ 4:58 pm | delete
In no place on this lens did I say that Zazzle designs were Creative Commons licensed. I said they were like Creative Commons in that, if you were a Zazzle associate and use Zazzle's affiliate codes -- giving credit and a link back to the store to promote the graphics -- then you may use them.

Both types of images are copyrighted, and in both cases, there are limited terms of use in which one may display the images with credit and a link back to the artist/photographer. In Zazzle's case, that link is a Zazzle affiliate link provided by Zazzle, so as to promote the design and store.

Been here before, but came back by clicking through from another of your lenses and so glad I did. I needed this refresher. Ironically (and delightfully), my referral income from Zazzle was higher than my Squidoo payout last month. Good for me; good for the artist. So exciting!

One other comment, Greekgeek. Since you are still in the early parts of launching your Zazzle store, but experienced with Squidoo, you are welcome to some (or a bunch) of my Zazzle designs/products to use in your lenses - if there are any that match up with your lens creating interests.

I'm going to enjoy seeing how you progress with your goals this year. Let's hope it's a great year for both of us. :)

  • vallain Nov 16, 2010 @ 6:31 pm | delete
I'm quite dependent on Zazzle for great graphics for my lenses and I've made quite a few sales for artists on there. Sometimes I put a Sticky Note module on a lens saying that the graphics can be bought at Zazzle, just click on any picture. This is in addition to Zazzle's own link under the picture.
Most of the modules will allow zazzle code somewhere. I never use the Zazzle module anymore, since I don't get referral fees from that.
I have used a Zazzle graphic for an intro photo, but also include the same picture a little later on with the appropriate Zazzle link.
  • Greekgeek Nov 16, 2010 @ 9:15 pm | delete
I may have misunderstood, but it sounds like Zazzle says we do NOT have permission to upload Zazzle graphics anywhere else -- like, say, a Squidoo lens logo -- because then we've made a copy of the file. Whereas as long as Zazzle is serving the image to us via an <img> code, the only copy of the file is stored on Zazzle.com. So the artist can choose to remove or modify the file. This ensures that the artist retains control and copyright of their own work.

So I would suggest you ask permission before doing that. Quite possibly, the artist wouldn't mind the publicity!
