Hanukah (Chanukah, Hanukkah) Graphics

Need images of menorahs, dreidels, candles, Stars of David and other traditional Hanukkah symbols to embellish your web page or blog? Here are some graphics, animated gifs, and banners, free for the taking. All are my own designs.

Chanukah... Hanukkah... Hanukah? Many different spellings are acceptable for this Jewish winter holiday. In this lens, I intentionally use all spellings in the text, but for the graphics I have mainly chosen to use HANUKAH or CHANUKAH.

Hanukah is sometimes referred to as the Festival of Lights. It lasts for 8 days, and on each day, candles are lit in a special candelabra, called a menorah. The menorah holds 9 candles: 1 for each of the 8 nights and a 9th "head" candle which is used to light the others. The candles are lit incrementally: on the first night, one candle is lit: on the 8th night the entire menorah is filled. One of the favorite holiday traditions in my family is the "candle races." Each person chooses a candle before they are lit. The last candle with a flame is the winner. I confess, though, that we often get involved in a game of dreidel and forget to check the candles!

The eight-day festival of Chanukah (also known as the Festival of Lights) starts near the end of December in 2011. The first official "day" will often appear on calendars as December 21, but since Jewish holidays run from sundown to sundown, the first candle lighting (and the official start to the holiday) is at sundown on December 20. This little widget counts down to December 20. Never too soon to start planning!

Thanks for these wonderful graphics. I have adopted one on my lens. Tonight is the first candle - last night my daughter got married, so from now on, Hanuka has special significance for me.
