Homeschool parents are busy people! We care for our children, teach them to the best of our abilities, research and study, shop and cook meals, launder the clothes, pick up toys constantly, attempt to keep the house clean, volunteer to many different organizations, coach sports teams or lead some sort of a youth group, and many times keep an outside job, also.

I'm out of breath just typing all that! From my beginning days as a homeschooler to a veteran, I have been helped, guided, and supported by many of my homeschooling peers. I don't know if I could do it without them. :-D There have been groups and individuals on the internet, also, that have helped answer questions or led me to information that was helpful. When I started written lenses (webpages) on Squidoo, I simply wanted to share some of the research and materials that I made. I figured if I took time to do it, it was a shame that only three children used them. I don't want to sell them, so I began this hobby at Squidoo in order to share and exchange with the homeschool community.

Some of the information below tells you about things we have done, takes you to units with lapbooks, worksheets, and notebooks that we have made, and leads you to wonderful links and websites that we have found helpful. Please share information that has been helpful to you, and take a moment to leave me a message so I know you were here. Thanks for visiting! I hope you find a few things that you and your children will enjoy!

Art Appreciation & Creative Skills

We have done quite a variety of art over the years - we have taken several art classes at co-ops, used the "How Great Thou Art" Art Curriculum and others, searched online resources, worked on art related to different time periods and other subjects, and mixed a variety of each. Here are only a few of the supplemental activities we have done.

Bible ~ The Heart of Our Homeschool

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." ~ 2 Timothy 3:16

The Bible is the center of all knowledge for us. Our studies are based around several things. We have done devotions around particular topics such as character & behavior, Christmas, giving thanks, and the Resurrection. We have also based our home studies around Bible passages that we were doing in Sunday school, youth groups, and co-op. Books of the Bible and studies related to other materials we are learning have been good, also. There are many places online that wonderful helps for homeschoolers, Sunday school teachers, and all students of the Bible that have been a help to us. :-D

Bible Gateway is a free online Bible! You may choose the translation you prefer and search by passage, topic, or keyword. Study resources are supplied, also. You may also listen to the free Audio Bibles from the site. We enjoy using these for our Bible study time.

Bible Resources is another site with free Bibles to read, search, and listen, but also contains sections on: Famous Bible Passages, Bible Promises, What the Bible Says to Kids, The Bible Is...(What the Bible says about itself), How To Study the Bible, Help in Scripture Memorization, Easton's Bible Dictionary, Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary, History of the Authority and Infallibility of the Bible, Fast Facts About the Bible, Great Quotes About The Bible, How has the Bible influenced the United States?, and History of the English Bible.

Foreign Languages!

"That is why it was called Babel - because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth." ~ Genesis 11:9

In learning new languages, we have used a variety of materials. We found that the public libraries have numerous CD's, CD Roms, videos, books, and even whole language courses to use at the library or to borrow, so that was our first course of study. Then we started to find online resources that were pretty cool, too. Via our language arts and vocabulary, we used a few supplemental books to study Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes. (I am so glad we did, and wish we had done more of that!) The children have taken a few mini classes of Spanish at local co-ops, also, to get them started.

*There are many free foreign language learning resources on the internet ~ I will list some as time permits in the future!*

With my oldest starting high school this year, I wanted something that I could truly count as a complete year of Spanish. She currently is in a homeschool class which meets weekly, but the teacher suggested that the students use "Rosetta Stone" products to practice and learn at home. We dove it and purchased the whole three years set of materials for Spanish! Expensive, but we figured three years times three kids, it would get much usage! It's a really fun way to learn a new language! The boys and I have been working through it at our own paces, also.

Mathematics

"May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples." ~ Genesis 28:3

For math, we have used mostly the "Abeka Book" series. The boys have been completely happy with them and have done well. My daughter wanted to try some other options though, so, one year she tried "Saxon" math. Very awesome books, but not quite the right thing for her. She has used "Teaching Textbooks" for Algebra II and Geometry and totally loves it! (Not something I would have expected from her since she prefers other subjects better!) She wants to continue with the series next year, also.

The WWW has some really cool sites and games to practice everyday math facts, and there are tons of worksheet and help sites!

Check the "Holiday Units" above for various math ideas for fun learning around the holidays!

Music Education is Music to my Ears!

"Praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute." ~ Psalm 150:4

JoyfulPamela ~
homeschool mom by day, music teacher & musician by evening and weekend!

Before I homeschooled my children, I was a music teacher in a Christian school. My excitement for music has never diminished therefore I still perform, teach private music students, direct music ensembles, and teach music history / theory type classes at times. I love doing it!! I've created a ton of lenses here at Squidoo and webpages around the internet about music and music education. A complete listing is found at "Joyful Songs Music" below.

Lessons that I wrote especially with fellow homeschoolers in mind (I've used them to teach in various homeschool co-ops in our area - but contain worksheets, videos, and full lessons for at home) are the "Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Unit" (5 pages), the "Mozart Unit Study", "Ludwig van Beethoven", "Antonio Vivaldi", "Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint Saens, "The Orchestra Series" (5 pages) - strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion), and "Music Theory ~ Reading Music". Most of them are full lessons written out and have lapbook materials, worksheets, games, videos, and other resources. They are all free to use. (I wouldn't mind a comment though so I know if anyone is using them,) I truly hope they will be helpful to you. :-D

A World of Adventure Unit Study!

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." ~ John 3:16-17

When we started to do unit studies, I felt I didn't have a clue what to do! A good friend suggested this incredible unit study to me - I am sure glad we took her advice! It has everything, and I really mean everything, you need for a complete unit study. It is written that each book is to cover a year, but most people I know who have done it take approximately two years per book. There is just so much stuff in this study. Besides having the daily plans completely written out for you, Mrs. Holt has huge lists of books to read, internet sites for research, and additional projects to try!!

After completing these units, I wanted to try my hand at creating my own unit studies. That is where most of the free units on this page come from! Yes, many of them are huge, and no, we did not use all the materials contained within them, but I listed extra things that I found interesting and thought would be useful to others. Just pick and choose what works for your children and ignore what doesn't!

"A one year study (180 days) using library books and the Bible. Covers all subjects (except math) in the following units: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, The Middle Ages, The Renaissance and Reformation, and the Age of Exploration." ~ We took three years to study through the first two books! They are fabulous! A book 4 and 5 are in the works by the author, Dorian Holt. An optional Yahoo group accompanies each level to help you connect to others using the unit study. Documents and worksheets created by others are stored on the group page for all to use. These units were like a breath of fresh air for us! These are exciting, fun, and thorough!

Book 3 ~ "Westward & Onward" studies through the 1800's!

Science Suggestions

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." ~ Genesis 1:1

Clipart by Phillip Martin

My boys really love science! Of course, the hands-on type is their favorite ~ expecially if it involves something messy! Our kitchen and dining room have served as our 'science lab' for years for learning about chemistry, small machines, physics, and magnets & electricity. The deck and backyard have been fantastic for studying meteorology (weather), botany (plants), astronomy (space), entymology (bugs), and ornithology (birds)!

Science field trips are awesome, too! A yearlong membership to the zoo has aided us in our zoological and biome studies. (Our trips to the zoo also corresponded with our 'around the world' studies - animals of Africa or Australia, animals of the wetlands or deserts, etc.). My favorite will always be my daughter's 'Animals of the Alphabet' book she created in kindergarten from our zoo trips!

Hiking through a nearby state park has been helpful in leaf collection or plant identification. It's really fun to make it into a treasure hunt searching for different types of plants. Taking along a plant identification book, a magnifying glass, a compass, an art notepad, and a lunch will allow you to learn about botany, enjoy drawing nature art, trek your way by compass directions (we always stay on the well marked paths, though), get some physical activity, and have a fun picnic in the woods! It's really cool to take pictures along the way, also, then come back in other seasons and take pictures of the same locations for comparisons!

One of the best investments we have made over the years that I would highly recommend has been a membership to the science museums! The first couple years we joined, a small local museum allowed a family membership for only $30 for one year! (Of course, the price has gone up significantly in the past decade.) That particular museum also had monthly homeschool science classes which we attended with our friends. The museum was connected with other science museums around the country in such a way that with the membership, we could visit numerous other science museums. There were about six, I think, that were within a couple hour drive, so, we made many day and weekend trips. Even on our vacations (LOL - or should we call them 'glorified field trips'), we were able to visit science museums free with our beloved membership!!

We also did a tremendous amount of study on mammals, insects, and ocean animals that we would like to share when time permits!

"A well-written multi-level science program that is neatly divided into 36 lessons. The wonderful teacher's guide is indispensable, informative, and family friendly. The easy-to-follow lessons are designed to flow smoothly with a high level of information for students and low level of teacher effort. This is a plus when teaching many levels at one sitting. Reproducible student workbooks are available giving you the option of buying extra workbooks or making copies. Each carefully thought out lesson has accompanying work pages. The variety and quality of these work pages will keep a child's attention. If you assign an older child to work with a younger child on each lesson, they will learn to cooperate. Their hands will be kept busy while you read and teach the lesson. You could take two years to go through this program if you supplement with homeschool science curriculum and resources. This is homeschooling at its best. Mrs. Mortimer and Mrs. Smith successfully incorporated the wonder of it into their Bible section. They creatively and scientifically selected scripture to support each lesson. Armed with Bibles, you can assign verses for each child to look up, read, and discuss. Considering God's Creation was chosen by homeschool expert and author Cathy Duffy in the science category as one of her 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum! Considering God's Creation Complete Set comes with a Teacher's Manual, Reproducible Student workbook, and audio CD." ~ Amazon

Social Studies / History Units & Resources

History ~ wow! So many cool places to visit, interesting cultures to meet, and influential people to study over centuries and millenniums! As with most homeschool families, we take a handful of years to go through the cycle of history, then start all over again with deeper research and understanding!

During the 2011 - 2012 school year, we will be focusing around the ancient civilizations of the world! History is one of the subjects that we tend to build more around unit studies than other topics, so, here are some of our units we've worked on. Yes, there are a lot of things listed. No, we didn't do everything on the pages. Each of the children worked at the same topics but at a different level, of course. Then, as I was creating these pages, I decided to add other interesting resources that I came across while I was searching. I thought they might be useful to you, plus maybe we'll use them next time around the cycle and I won't have to search very far for new ideas! :D

Social Studies ~ Civics!

After we studied about explorers, colonial America, and the Revolutionary War, we did an indepth study of the US Constitution and Patriotism! Since I did not even understand some of the parts or terms myself, I started researching and studying like I love to do! We made a lapbook and game while studying, watched some videos, learned some songs, read a bunch of books, and had quite a bit of fun surfing around the web finding kid friendly sites to learn, play games, and take "quizzes". All of the templates and pages we created along with mega information about the Constitution for all ages may be found via the "Constitution Lapbook Unit" page.

The "United States Flag" lessons and lapbook were made in the summer right before the 4th of July. The "Patriotic Music" page contains the history of some of the most famous patriotic songs, some videos of the tunes, and resource links to find out more.

United States History of the 19th Century

During the 2009-2010 school year we studied the history of the United States during the 1800's. So many cool events happened during that time period! The new nation began to grow and wanted to spread it's borders - whether that was a good idea or not, well, you'll have to decide for yourself. The children wanted to know how the US claimed more land, so we took a step back and studied the French Revolution to try to understand the time period and events of the world. From Napoleon to Jefferson led the Lousianna Purchase and the Lewis & Clark Expedition! After that huge chunk of land opened up, so many things began to happen (again, both good and bad).

The "United States History in the 1800's" page contains a little of everything that was happening over the century. You will find resources for the following.

Abeka Academy Books & Curriculum!

When my oldest child starting her schooling, we used Abeka Books materials almost for everything. They are very well organized, easy to use, and complete. My "out of the box" type personality didn't always like doing everything so straight and clear, so we took a three year break from Abeka to exclusively do unit studies. We love the flexibility and creativity of the units, but some days I felt like I was going in too many directions at once. So, now we use a combination of Abeka and self made unit studies depending on the topic we are studying. My daughter (high school) will be trying the Abeka Academy via internet option next year for the first time. We'll let you know how it goes! :)
