Most free hosts stay in business by adding advertisements to your pages, but some don't even require ads because the free service is a type of ad for the brand who provides the hosting.

Free hosts put multiple domains and sites on a single server, so they are able to serve a lot of resources at extremely low costs.

Squidoo is a great free host - in fact, its hosting the web page that you're reading right now! Squidoo doesn't cost anything and they've even made it easy to earn from the pages you publish. While they provide a lot of automated modules and the ability to customize a lot of the content, there are still some limits to what you're able to do with the software.

Blogspot is the home of Google's Blogger software - and you can get your own free blog on a subdomain of the Blogspot domain. While they don't use advertisements on your blogs by default, you can still place your own ads on the pages and make money with this completely free hosting service.

Wordpress is not just a powerful piece of software for building blogs and managing content, but it is also a free hosting provider that offers a great solution for non-commercial websites. The service they offer is similar to blogspot, but advertisements aren't allowed.

Some webhosts like Mister.net and Bravenet offer fully featured hosting - for free!

Of course, they've also got some paid hosting services available for when your site gets too big & popular for the free version. This helps them stay in business and it helps you start a business without risking any cash up front!

Remember Xoom? How about Geocities? While Geocities has been bought up by Yahoo, you can still use the service to get some free hosting.

This is the "oldschool" version of free hosting - these technologies are sort of obsolete these days but no discussion of free hosting would be complete without mentioning the pioneers in the field!

Sometimes, free hosting isn't a good solution for your website.

If you need to install specific software and/or you are expecting significant traffic to your sites, you may need to upgrade to shared hosting at the very least.
