10 Free Interview Questions You'll Be Asked... With Answers to get you Hired!

It's important to prepare yourself before an interview. You should have good and convincing answers for all these important questions. Your performance and interview skills are very important for landing a job in this competitive environment.

Here I will provide you 10 Free Interview Questions and answers. These questions and answers are from Peter Veruki's "The 250 Job Interview Questions," except I'll have my own little twist to it. If you like these, I recommend you take a look at the book.

These answers and suggestions are NOT the exact examples that are given in Peter's book. I have changed them since I don't enjoy copying, but the gist of the information remains the same.

Passion for the Business

Q:Why do you want to work in this industry?

A: I've always wanted to work for an industry that designs graphics cards. I have an interest in building computers, so I've used many of the cards made by your company. I could go anywhere else to design hardware, but I prefer working for a company whom I trust.

You should be passionate about the job you're applying for. Tell them a short story on how you got interested in this job position. Prove to them that you aren't just "shopping" in this interview. Be sure to act passionate throughout the interview.

Motivation and Purpose

Q: What would you do differently if you ran the company?

A: I might investigate the divisions in our company that aren't making good profits and start up an aggressive supplier-relations program.

Demonstrate that you know enough about the business to answer this convincingly. A good way to learn about the business is to talk to the company's insiders. This is an effective question to ask because it weeds out the "shoppers" from serious candidates.

Skills and Experience

Q: Compared to others with a similar background in your field, how would you rate yourself?

A: I've always been ranked in the top 10% of advertising professionals in my field. I sell online communications services. My clients are usually large companies that represent Corporate America. The challenge of selling to these companies has always given me an enjoyment, because they have high standards and know our product well. Because of this, I can be competitive and that puts me at the top consistently.

Be honest and sound confident within yourself, but don't make yourself sound arrogant. If you have something to boast about (such as being in the top 10%), then this is the time to say it!

Diligence and Professionalism

Q: Tell me about a time you didn't perform to your capabilities.

A: The first time I had to sell a product to another company in a presentation, I failed to answer some of their questions. I only prepared myself for the product I was reporting, but didn't think of preparing for questions. From then point on, my employees and I brainstorm all of the possible questions that might pop up.

This question makes you describe some sort of negative situation. Your best bet would be to describe early career mistakes due to your inexperience, and then show how you corrected it and performed well as a result of that experience.

Creativity and Leadership

Q: If you got on an elevator where everyone was facing the back, what would you do?

A: I'd most likely face the front and say to everyone "It's much better and more comfortable to face the front. You might also know when you're about to get off!"

Be prepared for quirky questions. Most of the time, the interviewer won't care what your answer is. However, the point is to find out how creative you can be. People in creative fields such as advertising and graphic design should be aware of this.

Compatibility with the Job

Q: Do you prefer continuity in structure or frequent change in your daily work?

A: I enjoy being challenged by different tasks, which is why I ask for the tougher assignments. The previous assignments that we discussed were ones that I asked for. I don't like to get bored at my work.

Your answer should be congruent with the job description. You should talk about environments that allow you to remain interest in your work without being bored.

Personality and Cultural Compatibility

Q: How will you complement this department?

A: I enjoy working in a company where its employees are empowered to help each other. I usually am great at fixing problems on computers, and I'm often going to ask for help regarding corrections for the letters I send out. I believe in having a helping community within the workplace.

Describe your personality and skills that could help out the department. What kind of people enjoy working with you? How do your customers and clients react? Answer in a way so that there won't be any surprises in your work personality.

Management Style and Interpersonal Skills

Q: What type of management style do you think is effective?

A: I tend to learn from people who act more as coaches instead of experts. When someone comes to me with a problem, I pretend to work through the problem with them. I never give them an answer straight up, because I want my employees to develop confidence in finding answers for themselves.

Talk about your management style and interpersonal skills with peer groups and other leaders. Also talk about how you can use past learning experiences from good leaders you've met.

Zingers

What are the questions that everybody fears? The totally unexpected questions. What's even worse is that many of them ask questions where you're not expected to answer!

These are called stress questions, and are designed to put you in shock! They want to see how well you might react to pressure on the job.

Q: Sell me this stapler.

A: This is a wonderful, high-quality stapler, designed to be useful in any workplace situation. It will help you remain organized in your office by allowing you to group your pages together. Now that the papers with the same subject are together, you'll have a much easier time searching for things.

The interviewer wants to see how well you can think in quick situations while being able to communicate well. Be prepared to give a quick sales pitch for any item in the office, especially if you're going for a sales position.

Q: How would you respond to a defaulted form Z-65 counterderivative renewal request if your manager ordered you to do so, and if the policy under which the executive board resolves such issues were currently under review?

You're thinking: "Uhhhh.... What? Repeat that again?" - This is one of those nearly-impossible questions. Like I said, they want to see how you'll respond under pressure. Be prepared with crazy questions such as these. If you get asked something nearly impossible, stop and think for a second... then say confidently "I don't know, but if you hire me, I'll find out for you."
