Childhood Diary of Civil War Days

on the homefront (in New York state)

Village Life in America 1852-1872 Including the period of the American Civil War as told in the diary of a school-girl

I just read this one and it had accounts of sewing circles making socks and wearing apparel for the troops. There was a good description of a troop train departing. Very pleasant reading about what life was like for a child/young lady in the 1850s-1860s.

Virginia, thanks for this great lens. You have some great books listed on here. I love everything about the civil war. I need to download some of these for my Kindle. I have a whole series of lens about the confederate ironclads you might like. There were many more US ironclads I hope to add in the future.

Thanks Virginia for stopping by my "Learning" lens. I too am a Civil War buff and am pleased to see this lens with so many free books listed. One that I don't see is my favorite... and one you may enjoy for free also: "History of Kershaw's Brigade" by Augustus Dickert http://books.google.com/books?op=add&sig=ACfU3U0SRxx--kmk36xvojl4BrR84IQwUA&uid=101454336190581651928&as_coll=7&id=zc_ighHkiZkC It is an articulate, keen offering from this soldier/author that, for me, transported me to the time period, the causes ... and the war itself. The book itself is quite rare, but I was pleased to see it online. My great, great Grandad was a postmaster and the receiver (paymaster) for the Confederacy in upstate SC and his son, My Great Grandad, was wounded at Bull Run and was in Kershaw's Brigade with the Palmetto Sharpshooters. Fascinating history to read and study.
