Boost your brainpower with this free mind map training possibility!?
As a Buzan Licensed Mind Map trainer I have a mission; get this fantastic tool into the world. Every person, especially kids, should have the opportunity to learn how to best learn.
I have one bottleneck; English is not my native language. So if you are able to forgive me my typos this training really could mean something for you as well. As I do know what I am talking about, you are sure that the info provided is good.
But why do I offer this training? Well, I am totally convinced that this technique is the best you can do when you are studying. I mainly use the technique while brainstorming (a big habit of mine). Others use it for other purposes, like planning or meetings.
This mind map tool can be used in so many different ways!.
But I think that every person in the world should get the same chance as everybody. This shouldn't depend on your financial status.
Well, I cannot offer you a Harvard degree. But I can offer you how to best study!. If you apply that you will increase your chances of going to Harvard University.
Were you ever taught how to optimize your brainpower?
Most schools teach you how to cram, but not how to learn to learn.
In most cases schools will not teach you anything about how to best learn in order to be able to study loads of materials.
Not at all, in most cases, the moment kids are able to read independently, cramming starts!. They don't even spent time to learn you how to cram!.
I am curious: What is your experience with this?!

- A few weeks ago I did a workshop with a well known firm in the Netherlands. They indicated that they had difficulties in identifying what's important and what's not. They also wanted to understand their processes in detail, as loads of info was the basis of these processes.
One person made a remark about what we did: "It's funny to notice that while drawing the mindmap I notice that I am internalizing the material as well. At the same time I am repeating the information over and over and while doing this, I constantly check wether or not everything is right AND at the right place".
I couldn't have summerized it better. That's what I notice while mindmapping as well. I am sure you, Susan, can do the same.
And don't forget, this person I am talking about had never mindmapped before!.

- My father did a good job of teaching me how to make summaries of the material I needed to learn. Since my teens I have always used the same approach. but I have learned to slog my way through loads of information, not really processing it while I'm doing it, then still having shortened notes to learn from. A long and labour intensive process. Now that our daughter (14) is at school my husband and I are wanting to give her skills to a) absorb and learn the information she needs to and b) to do this effectively and efficiently so that she has still time to be a 14 year old kid. We know about mind mapping, and have taught her the basics at primary school for her 10 minute talks in the class. But I notice when I'm trying to help her say for example with a subject like history with a lot of facts, that I end up not being able to distinguish what should go on the mind map and what not.

What is a mind map?
Still we do make our notes this way. As a result we get bored; while taking notes and especially when reviewing our notes. Long sentences, all written in one color (the color of your pen), if we are lucky we use a marker pen in order to get our attention to specific subjects. Further the notes will extend over several pages. This means that we do have to turn several pages in order to study the subject. In reality this means that we are out of context the moment we turn a page.
This all will not have favourable effects on you memory.

A mind map is different from normal note taking.

First of all we only write down keywords of the text we want to remember. Only this fact will reduce the amounts of text by approximately 90%.
And this is according the way our brains function; we think in terms of keywords and not sentences.
Secondly a mind map consists out of branches. These branches form the connections between the different keywords. Due to the branche our brain is capable of instant identification of the relationship between the different keywords.
As these branches are thicker the closer they are to the main keyword, it is easy to identify the hierarchy between the several keywords.
When placing several keywords in a specific order, our brain is perfectly capable of refining the meaning of these keywords. With only a few keywords a string of keywords form a meaning which can only interpreted in one way. This means you understand exactly what is meant by just a few keywords.

We also integrate images within a mind map.
Why do you do that with mind maps?
We simply remember better when we think in terms of images. This is a right brainside speciality!.
We have an almost perfect memory when we think in terms of images.
In normal note taking we do not integrate this speciality of our brain.
Are you surprised? Why, as no teacher ever told us to use this brainpower in your favour.
In a mind map we use this brainpower. When we combine the keyword with a related images throughout a mind map, a piece of art evolves out ot the text.
At first this may seem weird. This is the initial reaction of people who see a mind map the first time in their lives.
But when somebody explains how the mind map was made, everybody will immediately see and acknowledge the power of this way of note taking.
Another advantage of a mind map is that all information will be put on ONE page.
This means you will never get out of context!.
Now this seems not too important, but realize this: All information, main topics and details, are all placed on one piece of paper!.
This means you will have an helicopter view and at the same time you can be very specific about a subtile subject.
The power of this feature of a mind map is incredible!.
And this is only the beginning of all the advantages which are involved in mind mapping.

I am curious about why people love to learn. Maybe we can learn from them.
