Why free mp3s & downloads could be the future...
This lense discusses and speculates the theory that in the near future, actual music downloads could become a marketing tool for something even bigger...
The Death of the Old Industry Model...
Why major record companies are fighting...
With all of the free mp3s downloads being shared throughout the internet, it's no wonder that the big record companies are losing money. It's also no wonder that they are fighting so hard to end it...But what if they are actually missing out on the possibility of creating a new business model with these free mp3s downloads that could potentially make more profits than they are currently getting? What if, instead of wasting time and money paying lawyers to go after these kids getting free mp3s downloads, they spent that time and energy figuring out how to capitalize on it?
The problem is, the major record labels are stubborn in their old ways, and they seem to have a hard time adapting to the changing trend of the music industry.
The music industry is going virtual, and the giant elephants (major record companies) are too big to turn around and move as quickly as some of the new social music websites that are finding ways to profit by letting users download songs and listen to free music.
Are these record labels truly fighting for their artists? Or could it be that they are feeling left out and are really more concerned about their own bottom line than that of their artists?
It could surely be the former though, that they are feeling left out, because even though artists may be losing out on sales, the free mp3s and downloads are actually helping the artists to pack out more shows, and in essence make more money for shows and performances; profits of which the record companies usually don't get a big part of.
Awwww, Poor Labels....Literally!...If They Don't Join The Revolution!
The trend is your friend, so follow it, but follow it uniquely...
Since the record companies don't normally take a significant amount of profits from the artist's shows and performances, then they miss out on the benefits of increased shows that artists can get as a result of free mp3s & downloads. With this in mind, clearly the old music model must adapt, and new ways of generating revenue must develop. If this doesn't occur soon, then major labels could phase out of the picture, especially those who don't adapt.
As a matter of fact, I'm going to make a bold prediction: If the major labels don't adapt and continue to pursue the old way, not only COULD they fade out....but they WILL fade.
This is the death of the old, and the birth of a new.
Music will no longer be the sole means of revenue, it will just be a marketing tool for something bigger.
Music artist's won't have to be limited in their creativity and do what they labels force them to do. Fans won't be forced into liking a song just because the radio station plays it over and over again until it grows on people due to illegal payola and other underground tricks.
This will be the way of the new music industry, and sites like JamBuzzer will aid in leading the way. There are others that will come along.
I still believe that there is a way to give free mp3s downloads and profit just as much, if not even more than with the old standard model of CD sales.
As I borrow a quip from the Barack Obama Presidential Campaign, this is:
Change You Can Believe In......in the music industry ;)
How Web 2.0 Is Changing The Music Industry
A project put together by a student for his class project
This shows how the new ways can benefit the artists, even those without major record labels behind them, and further validates why the record companies should continue to join in the new trends.
