Ten Tips for Building Your First SquidZipper Lens

A Step-By-Step Lensbuilding Tutorial

just_do_it

  1. All you need is a zip code to begin. Enter a zip code and hit Build it!
  2. It's fine to completely ignore questions 1-9 on the MagicBuilder. Answer any that apply and select MagicBuild my Page!
  3. Don't worry about content yet. Just choose I want it!
  4. Pick your url (preferably your business name) and hit Continue.
  5. Type the word that appears and hit Continue.
  6. Edit your lens title at the top of the page and hit Save.
  7. The MagicBuilder will provide several modules for you. Delete any you don't want, scroll back to the top of your lens, and choose Save Draft. Your lens is now saved and ready to edit whenever you like. It won't be live until you publish it.
  8. Go through your Workshop Tools on the right side of the page. This is where you'll edit your author bio, upload a photo, add up to 40 tags, choose lens settings, and specify royalty settings. After entering new information, choose Save Draft to update your lens.
  9. Now you're ready to edit your lens and add content. Just get the basics down for now with an introduction (including a photograph), a few modules describing the services you offer, a Google Blog Search module set up to pull blog posts related to your business, and a guestbook. When you're satisfied, hit Publish and your lens will be ready for viewing and further editing. You can always add more modules later, which will help to keep the content fresh and updated. Visit other SquidZipper lenses for ideas and inspiration.
  10. Be sure to mention the name of your business in the lens title, introduction, guestbook, in your tags, on at least one or two module subtitles, and on all photograph labels.

Earn Money with Your SquidZipper Lenses

Raise Funds for Your Business and for Charity

To increase your SquidZipper's earning potential, simply include some money-making modules, like Amazon, CafePress, and Zazzle. Samples of these modules are shown below. This is strictly optional—if your objective is to attract leads, a SquidZipper lens will work fine without money-making modules. You can also add them at a later time. That's the power of Squidoo!

One of my favorite ways to monetize SquidZippers is with the Images of America books produced by Arcadia Publishing. I have several of these books in my own library, and often give them as gifts. Arcadia Publishing produces several other series that might also work for SquidZipper lenses, including Postcards of America, Then and Now, Campus History, and Corporate History. Some of these may be difficult to detect with the Amazon 'search' feature. For example, SquidZipper lenses featuring San Francisco could include books about Alcatraz Island, the Bay Bridge, and Golden Gate Park. I have better luck finding selections on the Arcadia Publishing Website and then searching for those particular titles directly from the Amazon module.

An Images of America author spotted his book on one of my notary SquidZipper lenses and thanked me for using it. That was pretty exciting!
