Free Online Scary Stories for Halloween

Have Fun Telling Scary Stories to Kids on Halloween!

Be the center of attention by telling the best scary stories on Halloween.

My grandkids (see the two shown to the left who are waiting for a story?) love for Grandpa to tell them "scary" stories. Grandpa has the best imagination, but Gigi -- me -- needs all the free online help that I can get. You, dear reader, are in luck because I found several sites on the web that have spooky stories that one can read (or tell). All are suitable for kids. By suitable, I mean there is no foul language or sex. You are the one who needs to decide how much fear your own children can handle.

So, cuddle up to the computer, my dearies, and settle down for a trip to spooky, scary story sites on the web. You might want your blankie for security, though.

Scary Kid Story Tip from Grandpa:

Tell your favorite scary story, but when it comes to the "monster" revealing itself, have it be something funny like a mound of mashed potatoes.

A list of spooky stories suitable for kids

of course they are frighteningly free

Just to whet your appetite, here is a list of a few kid friendly stories. I have included a few lines from each one so you can get the creepy, crawly feeling. There is also a Mummy Story Idea.
  • 1The Gloop Maker
No excerpt because what this Gloop maker does would make a poor man cry.
  • 2A Short Scary Story with a Funny Ending
It's more of a joke than a story, but it's a good filler between other stories.
  • 3Vinder Viper Story
The story begins: Years ago, a man inherited a house from his great uncle who died in the war. The house sat on a hill outside of town in the next state and rumors were told that it was haunted.
  • 4The Helpful Ghost
Jimmy was excited. Uncle Julius was coming to dinner. Uncle Julius was a civil engineer. He'd travelled all over the world building roads and bridges. And Jimmy knew that whenever Uncle Julius came over he always told stories about his exciting adventures in all the interesting places he'd to.

But today was different. Instead of telling Jimmy about lions in Africa or the carnival in Brazil, Uncle Julius told a story about when he was a student, along, long time ago.
  • 5Never mind them watermelons!
This story has a link to someone actually telling it! Go check it out.
Well now, old Sam Gibb, he didn't believe in ghosts. Not one bit. Everyone in town knew the old log cabin back in the woods was haunted, but Sam Gibb just laughed whenever folks talked about it.
  • 6Mummy Scary Story:

Older children may enjoy a spooky Egyptian mummy tomb story. One can play "The Mummy" movie soundtrack and lower the lights. Children MUST close their eyes while you tell a story and pass around objects for them to touch. The story should include entering an ancient tomb and feeling the remnants of the mummification process (gross!!!!!)
    Creepy, feeling Ideas include:

The mist from the Nile River--Gently spray children with water spray bottle

    Dessert sand--actual sand

Stench of ancient tomb--open jar of something smelly (sauerkraut?)

    Pharaoh's eyes--peeled grapes

    Pharaoh's hair--doll hair

Pharaoh's brain--some time of ooze like play slime or putty

Pharaoh's bones--dog bone or chicken bone

    Pharaoh's intestines--gummy spaghetti

Pharaoh's treasure/Golden idol--statue, trophy or gold foil covered chocolate bunny

You may wish to end the story by having someone appear as the mummy!

The Scary Skeleton Costumes

I know, you just love the costumes that my grandsons are wearing in the picture above. Well, I am sad to tell you that the Skeleton Masks were purchased from Old Navy in 2010 and are not available this year. The skeleton outfits are actually pajamas. They glow in the dark, too! The bare feet came with the kids and are not for resale.

You could wear a matching glow in the dark shirt while you are telling your scary story!

Some Scary Skeleton Costume Suggestions:

This is the closest that Amazon can come to reproducing the Spooky Skeleton Costume that my grandsons are wearing in the photo above. I found three beanies that could substitute for the cap/mask Bubbie and Coopy wear all year long. Yes, they do.

Tell me a scary story:

If you are up to it, tell me your kids' favorite scary stories. My grandchildren just love "ghost" stories. I'll have to get Grandpa to tell them one and I can write it down so I can share it with you. Of course, I cannot reproduce the scary noises that he makes. Like, how can I make "hoooooooo--ooooh" seem as scary as he does? I might have to look for some scary fonts.
