Passover is a different kind of holiday. The 4 questions asked during the special meal (Seder) that is eaten on the first two nights make a point of that fact. They ask Why is this night different from all other nights? and the answers are an integral part of the ceremony.

This Jewish Festival commemorates the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, where they have been enslaved for many, many years. Their release is achieved after much suffering and after God, through Moses, lays an escalating series of plagues on the Eqyptians, until even Pharoah's pigheadedness (the unrecorded plague #9.5) is overcome.

The events of the exodus include the succeeding 40 years of wandering in the desert during which God gives the Ten Commandments to the the Children of Israel (twice). At the Passover Seder, the entire story is retold, amid prayer, song, and numerous ceremonies. For those unfamiliar with the story, I have to recommend the movie The Ten Commandments, directed by Cecil B. De Mille and starring Charleton Heston and Yul Brynner. It's an over-the-top extravaganza that's great fun to watch and will give you a pretty good (albeit melodramatic) version of the story in a mere 4 hours... I still watch it every year.

Meanwhile, for those who are planning Passover articles, blog posts, or lenses, here are some free Passover graphics I designed for use on personal pages (a link back to this lens would be very much appreciated). Enjoy!

Add a Miriam Cup to Your Seder

Miriam Cups are a relatively new addition to the traditional Seder. Their purpose is to recognize the important role played by Miriam in the Exodus from Egypt and in the events both preceding and succeeding it. This exquisite cup is a very feminine celebration of Miriam. In the Seder, Miriam's cup is filled with water -- to hark back to Miriam's well that provided water to the Children of Israel in the desert.

Hand-Painted Wood Matzoh Plate

This colorful wooden matzoh plate features an all-over handpainted design that depicts biblical characters. The plate is lacquered for protective purposes and is quite sturdy. Attractive enough to be displayed year-'round. This will become a treasured heirloom, I believe.
