What Is Plagiarism?
Is It Plagiarism?
A good question. You have fair use laws on the one hand and outright plagiarism on the other. Here's some tips for recognizing plagiarism:
- They use your work without crediting you. They basically try to take the credit for your work. They're the guys who slept right through that high school lecture on MLA-style formatting and proper citations and now think it's OK to take your work.
- They act like they're doing you a favor by copying your work. I've seen cases like this. You can warn them several times and it will make no difference. They will either ignore you or act like total snots. There's nothing you can do except report them to the proper online authorities like Google and DMCA.
- They may have copied from several sources. This can be spotted by analyzing their writing style. If it changes suddenly every few paragraphs, it's one sign that they scraped from multiple sources.
- You spot their work on several places on the Internet. It's like leaving a crumb trail. You might find them here on Squidoo, on Hubpages, and also on sites like eHow, About and Yahoo Voices. On Squidoo, it's very easy to report them; you just scroll to the bottom of the page and hit the report button. They might not go down right away, but they WILL go down.
What Can You Do?
- Search and Destroy. The first step towards shooting down plagiarism is detecting it. You can plug several paragraphs into Google and see what turns up, or you can use our free plagiarism checker.
- Contact them first so they can't claim ignorance. I've also seen cases where somebody was simply fuzzy on what constituted copyright violations and corrected their mistake once they became aware of it. By contacting them, you'll give them a fair chance.
- Report to Google and DMCA. Google can send plagiarists into the sandbox where no one will ever see their site in search results. They can also yank their account if they have Google Adsense. DMCA also has tools to get plagiarists taken down. If it's a blog, in most cases you can also report it to Wordpress or Blogger and they can take it down.
- Report it to their web host and/or ISP. They can be tracked down. The web host can yank their hosting and their Internet service provider (ISP) can block their Internet access.
