Free printable Chore Charts

Ranked #20 in Parenting & Kids, #653 overall

Free Printable chore charts and low cost rewards build confidence

Free printable chore charts can be used to help any child learn responsibility and for kids with developmental delays or autism they can also be used for daily scheduling, therapy scheduling or for actual chores! Chore charts can be used for kids, adults or the entire family!

While most of these free printable chore charts are designed for neurotypical children (kids without neurological or developmental disabilities) I have also tried to find picture chore charts specifically for kids with autism and other developmental disorders.

Kids with Autism and other developmental challenges really thrive on structure and many feel more secure and communicate more easily when they have visual cues. Chore charts can provide them with some stability and structure whether you use them for daily reminders or actually use them for chores. Instead of writing the jobs in the boxes, simply take a few photos or print out some clipart and use velcro dots to affix them as you would with a PECS system!

Does your child with Autism or developmental delays do Chores? If you need help figuring out how to get them to do chores or for ideas on how to modify daily tasks for children with special needs, please click here. But don't forget to come back for your free printable chore chart!

Please note that I have personally visited each and every free printable chore chart link provided on this page to make sure that it was not one of those sites where you land and pop ups happen. When I get to each of these sites I do click around a bit and explore to be sure that they do in fact have what they say they do AND that it is free. A few sites may require free registration, some ask you to sign up for newsletters- I try to make a note of that, but occasionally I may forget, feel free to leave a comment about it if I do.

Toward the bottom of the page you will find low cost options (anything that I have found that costs money will be clearly marked) please explore those links if you had not yet found what you were looking for in the free areas as they MAY offer you the right inspiration to make your own! There are also a few Amazon modules (Again, CLEARLY MARKED) containing suggestions for use with your system- the intent of including them is to simply get your creative juices flowing! Sometimes seeing the product will get you to say "Hey, I have some of those at home that we could use for this!".

I have been frustrated in the past when searching for these items myself as pages like this often send you to sites that require PAID registration- I do NOT want that to happen here- if you come across one that snuck in, please let me know! I would love for this to be a good resource for everyone, your contribution to the list may help someone else, please leave any links that you are aware of, I will check them out and add them. There is also an area that I would like people to vote their favorite free printable chore chart pages up to give other readers a better idea of which ones may be the best and save them some time!

Chore charts are great for kids of all ages from toddler to teenager!

If you are on the fence about starting a toddler or preschooler....

When a toddler or preschooler starts doing chores early on, they develop a better sense of "this is just what we do"... if you wait until they are older however, you may face more challenges as they have developed the idea that you do the chores, not them! Rather than being a task that is thrust upon them, it is a daily part of life.

Obviously you have to be sure to give a toddler or preschooler age appropriate chores such as picking up toys, sorting laundry by color or wiping up messes (without chemicals) while older children may be able to safely complete more adult chores.

Regardless of the age of the child, it is important that you reward them for their efforts. Rewards do not need to be big or expensive- they can even be you spending extra time doing an activity with your child that they love! Just make sure to be consistent with your rewards.

Kids with autism or ADHD benefit greatly from the use of chore charts. Because kids with autism (and many with ADHD) are mostly visual thinkers, the chore chart supplies them with visual cues for your verbal directions and may help them organize their thoughts better. Free printable clipart is available in many places so you can create your own pictures to affix to the chart for greater visual support.

For kids with special needs, you can find a few other creative uses for free printable chore charts such as creating a therapy schedule, medications or even daily routines!

Just choose your preferred size from the link list below! I hope this inspires your little one to work hard!

Ernie understands the value of work and respects his property as well as the property of others. In this Ernie Earnswell book (the first in the series), Ernie meets Ashley Affluenza, a pretty girl whose Mom has had 'trouble' saying "No". Ashley becomes spoiled and rude. A little lesson in the value of work changes Ashley's perspective and she soon finds herself filled with pride after helping out with chores and being more respectful!

NOT FREE :Velcro to add visual cues to a chore chart

I recommend sticking velcro dots on it with movable pictures!

Velcro Sticky-Back Hook and Loop Fasteners, 0.625 Inches Diameter Coins, Clear, 75 per Pack (91302)

Amazon Price: $2.79 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

These small velcro dots are great for adding images to your chore chart! Simple visual cues such as a Happy face for completed tasks or a sad face for those jobs the child refused to do are an easy way to help your child measure their progress throughout the week! The dots are clear, and by using these instead of drawing on the chart, you will likely get more time out of the chart!

I do recommend laminating the chart if possible or printing it on card stock for durability. When sticking velcro dots on the chart, it is best to keep the softer side on the small images so that children with tactile aversions will still be willing to participate in putting up their own "job complete' images.

NOT FREE: Ideas to Reward Your Child

Rewarding your child is the best way to encourage them to continue doing their chores

These items are unfortunately not free but I included them to help you get creative.

If you look below you will see poker chips, stickers and even party favors. Do you have anything like those things around the house that you could create a reward system with? Do you have games in the closet that no one uses anymore like checkers or connect four with chips that could be used as reward tokens?

When using a reward buck system or poker chip system you should decide on the big prize before introducing the system to your child- then be sure to explain the system in a way that they can understand. For example in my system we use the reward bucks. My son earns them doing various chores and can get bonus bucks for getting perfect scores on tests at school. In our system when he was 3 years old I displayed a brand new toy on top of the fridge with a post it note that had the "price" on it. When he had enough reward bucks he got the prize. Now that he is older, he gets $10 instead!

Although our system is 1 reward buck for one dollar, we have made it more affordable by grouping the chores together- for example when he cleans his room, he gets the dollar for the whole room, not just for picking up the floor- he must wipe down the shelves, vacuum and take his laundry downstairs to get that dollar- when he was first starting though- each buck was worth $0.25 and he earned one for EVERY small task. We encourage him to keep his room clean all the time by giving him a reward buck for every 3 days where nothing needed to be done at all (a weekly vacuuming as I do the rest of the house does not count against his efforts).

NOT FREE: Pre paid credit cards designed as rewards for chores

It is important to remember to reward your child for completing their chores regularly to encourage them to continue doing them. Older kids may not be impressed by stickers as rewards, so you must be a little more creative.

Personally, I bought a little "reloadable visa" at the checkout AND a gift card to Toys R Us, we use the toys r us card most of the time- and it is free to have and reloadable. Please use caution with Pre Paid Debit cards. Do not get one that allows your child to spend more than they have!

But in case you are interested in something a little more mature to help teach fiscal responsibility....

PAYjr Visa Buxx offers an innovative chore and allowance system for kids and teens, in conjunction with prepaid, Visa Buxx, reloadable debit cards. Discover a new way for teens to make and receive payments.

A selection of cards- it says "Get a reloadable prepaid MasterCard for your teen. No activation fee, no overdraft fees, accepted at millions of locations worldwide"- Please note that it did NOT mention monthly or annual fees or if it would automatically draw from the parent's account....

Visual Cues help younger kids and kids with Autism and other disabilities understand their chore chart!

Clipart by OCAL added my own random photoshop stuff for fun.

Images above may be found at CLKR, OCAL and some are shapes in photoshop.

Chore charts help provide structure and routine, but some kids need more than that! A text based chore chart is great for some kids, but young kids and kids with autism may do better with image based chore charts.

Kids with autism are visual thinkers so a simple clipart image (or better yet a photo that you take from around your own home) can really help them understand what is truly expected of them. Visual support is used for autism throughout the day at most schools and many therapists use them as well so a child with autism is probably familiar with visual cues.
