Free printable Behavior Charts,Reward Charts and Visual Cues to help with Autism
Ranked #4 in Parenting & Kids, #223 overall
Kids with Autism need a lot of visual support -expensive visual support
I am a mother to a wonderful 7 year old boy who got his first diagnosis around 12 months. We were beyond broke, living on a single income of an E-3 in the Army in one of the most expensive cities in the US.
I started hunting for all of the things that were recommended by the therapists- behavior charts, award charts, PECS and other visual cues. We could not even afford the starter kit.
I started to make some charts myself based upon images I had seen of the actual items. At first, they were aweful, eventually they improved as I learned what I wanted and which techniques were right for our family.
Some families do great with sticker charts, others do better with poker chip or reward buck systems. Free printables make it possible for you to give it a try, then tweak it as necessary to suit your own family's needs best. It is true that consistency is the most important factor- but If after a few weeks, you find yourself having difficulty using or even remembering to use a particular system, it may be time to look at a different one. It has to work for everyone in the home to be effective at all.
I stumbled across a site of free printables one day- I did have an old printer with SOME ink in it so I thought I would give it a try. I had nothing to laminate them with so instead I used clear packaging tape (it gets a lot of bubbles but it does the job quite well!) Until I found cheap velcro dots we used tape (rolled up, sticky side out) to attach the cues yet keep them moveable.
What a difference the visual cues make! If you need some but can't afford them you do not need to forgo them completely! Try out some of these free printables - most can be modified to your liking or you could even use them to inspire you to create a system that works best for you!
if you do not find what you are looking for through these links be VERY careful searching online- when I google "free printable reward chart" the links often are those that LOOK like what you want, then when you get there it takes over the browser and says "warning your PC may be at risk, windows has" blah blah... (I have Mac). The links below absolutely do not do that- just be careful if you wind up searching, clicking on their "options" will make it worse, just close the window- I force quit and restart to be safe, on a PC I would use task manager which I keep open when searching for anything with the word "free" in it as those are constantly affected.
I hope you enjoy these! Please leave a note in the comments if you know of any more that I should add.

If you need some specific visual cues and can not find them and can not make them, please feel free to contact me and I will try to put something together for you!
Visual Cues are are often called visual support and are used in classrooms and by therapists because most kids with autism are visual thinkers. Most kids with autism respond better to an image than verbal directions. It is strongly recommended by most experts that a visual support system be implemented at home as well to help the child be more successful.
Visual Cues systems can be expensive. The kit is extremely important but you can find lots of free printable visual cues that can be used with virtually any system!
Free printable visual cues can be used to make a visual schedule or as social cues as well as helping children with autism develop better language skills!

Reward Chart
Please link back if using this image on line.
If your child has their eye on something special (a toy, a special outing etc) I recommend a discussion in which you offer to let them earn that special toy ... one behavior at a time and they must demonstrate whatever behavior you are targeting a certain number of times before they may have the prize. Show them a reward chart and explain that they must fill it up with good behaviors!
The number of rewards on a behavior reward chart can vary. They can be used all day long, or for daily goals. If you are using the variety above through out the day, it may become necessary to create a small book of the reward charts and require that the child fill up each chart over the course of a week (especially if you are offering a bigger prize)
Here is an example for the type of chart above.
Hypothetically, let's say you are trying to get your child to share with a sibling and that your child wants to go to Mc Donald's. Explain to your child that each time they play with their sibling, they have a chance to earn a star and that when they have earned ALL of the stars on the page, you will then take them. Tell them that you will award them the star when you see them sharing well. Watch them play together, allow them to share, tell them they have done a good job and bring out the star chart.
Have your child color in the trail of stars- they get to color (or glitter glue, place a sticker on...etc) in one star each time you are rewarding them for positive behavior (so not all at once). When the trail is complete, have the child redeem their chart for a very special prize that you had offered at the beginning!
FREE Chore charts
Chores are a wonderful tool to help kids learn responsibility and gain confidence. All kids should have some type of household responsibility- whether it is simply putting their own clothes into the laundry basket or actually assisting in the housework, there is something for everyone- even those with disabilities!
Kids with Autism and other disabilities benefit greatly from the use of chore charts as they offer visual support for verbal instructions and it helps to maintain routine and structure (which kids with autism crave). Chore charts are also a great way to help your child predict their therapy routine for the week!

FREE advice to create your own behavioral system for free or very inexpensively and creative ideas!
Some kids will initially resist, particuarly those with autism, aspergers or oppositional defiant disorder. They may not want to give up control or they may worry that they are being punished if the systems are not used correctly. Whatever type of system you use, please remember to always praise your child for positive behaviors!
Here are some great sites with free tips and advice when it comes to selecting, implementing or designing your own behavior or reward chart or visual cues!
- Charts & Chips - Using A Behavior Modification System With Your Child
- Easy steps to start a behavior modification system with your child.
- Teaching Children with Autism: Visual Supports
- Read Let's Get Visual, by Brian S. Friedlander, Ph.D., an article on software for creating visual tools for children with autism and other developmental disorders.Individuals with autism are often described as "visual learners" or "visual thinkers." Social stories (text and instructions for making the book)
- Homeschool Curriculum for Life
- Make your own chore chart with these easy to follow instructions for your children's chores
- Confessions of a Homeschooler: Chore Chart Cards
- I'd like to introduce a new idea to help organize your home: the Interactive Kid's Chore Chart! I was previously using a handwritten chore chart, but I kept forgetting to pay my kids for their chores, and they would forget to write down when they completed one. I needed something more visual for everyone, and got this wonderful idea from a woman at my local homeschool mom's night this month!
- A Place of Our Own: Behavior Chart
- When young children show some signs of ADD or ADHD, managing their behavior can be challenging. Keeping a behavior chart where you can document the child's progress and provide daily and weekly rewards for their successes has proven to be very successful in managing many of the challenging behaviors that can accompany ADD and ADHD.

Do you use free printables for children?
Whether they are neurotypical or have autism!
Below this box the links are for LOW COST items that I have found that you may find useful.
Sometimes the free items just don't meet your needs so I have included some low cost items. Low cost means different things to different people as you have probably already discovered hunting around the internet for free and low cost items. My definition of low cost for these items is between $1 and $5 for charts (already laminated). Somewhere between $5 and $40 for a book (depending upon quality) and between $20 and $90 for PECS.
Cheap items can get very expensive if you do not really think about whether they will meet your needs though as you will find yourself constantly replacing them so be sure even before spending $1!
I included the more expensive PECS system as that is the best visual cues system and if you are trying to make your own you should at least look at the real one for inspiration (although since they are the best I recommend saving up for the PECS) -hopefully your teachers or therapists have actually taught you how to use it or have offered to once you have something!
Ever wonder how those SuperMoms do it?

Low Cost visual aids
(Not Free)
- pecs,nonverbal communication,pcs,augmentive communication
- mega resource of information on pecs pictures, pcs symbols and icons, autism nonverbal communication, photographic communication pictures
- Picture Cards and more at LessonPix
- This is the BEST site for low cost visual support for a child with special needs! Not only is it affordable, but the visual cues are professional quality comparable to those of PECS (dare I say a smidge better?) and you can print them out from the comfort of your own home! There are a LOT of different things to make like visual cues, playing cards, pattern strips, lacing, bingo and more! It is also easy to use!
- Reward Charts - The Big Bannana Tree
- UK: Rewards Charts 2.45 pounds (I don't know how to make the symbol!)
Real PECS Systems: not free. not inexpensive
I included the real PECS so you could explore it and get ideas!
Nothing else is as good as the original PECS systems.
UPDATED MAY 10th , 2012
If you have NOT been able to afford a PECS system... please check out the PECS available on Amazon right now... Thank you SO much to the reader who emailed me on December 6th to let me know that the price is NOT displaying correctly on this page! As of 12/7/2011 at 0544CST (and I check it again every week since that day) I checked the PECS on Amazon and confirmed that they were 50% less than shown below! One set is selling for $57 instead of $114- I am not sure if this is the new, permanent price or a sale.
I am not notified of changes in price by Amazon (and the boxes automatically display a price and sometimes fail to update) so I can not make any guarantees about when the price will change or how long the change in price will last- but if possible, it is REALLY worth it just to click and check if they are in your price range yet. Again, they are here as a resource so please do not feel pressured to buy- I just had to let you know this in case cost has been prohibitive for you!
Again, thank you SO much to the reader for emailing me about the change in price!!!!

Great tool for reminding about good behavior during the holiday season
Holidays can be so exciting and overstimulating that old behaviors may begin to manifest again simply because the child becomes overwhelmed. This is an easy way to get them excited about the holidays while reminding them that their behavior always matters!
The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition with Blue Eyed North Pole Pixie-Elf
Amazon Price: $19.75 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
I recently bought Elf On The Shelf for my son after it was recommended by another writer here on Squidoo. This is a wonderful tool to help encourage good behavior around holiday time!
The Elf on the Shelf (yes, it comes with an Elf) sits and watches the child throughout the holiday season- of course the magic will not work if he is handled by the child- so no touching! The elf reports to Santa EVERYTHING - good and bad. That is how Santa knows whether you have been naughty or nice.
He is a friendly and playful elf who keeps the child engaged and aware of their behavior by sneaking out to talk to Santa while the child sleeps and finding a new hiding spot every morning. The child must look for his new spot every day!
The book is an adorable rhyme about the elf's job and expectations- we are now reading the book together three times a day. My son absolutely loves this- I only wish we had gotten it when he was much younger because this is a great tradition!
This Job Chart was only $1
I found it at Target in the dollar section, they also have homework schedules that you could use for a therapy schedule

I joust bought this 2 days ago (when we recently moved Cutie's job chart got crumpled and crushed) This chart is great, it has a magnet on the back and is laminated. You could use stickers or dry erase markers. You could also print out clipart and cut them to fit in the grid on the chart- use velcro dots to attach them!
Tons of great deals!
Serious flooding in Bangkok
Please take a moment to visit Raphaelo
ADDED OCTOBER 26, 2011:If you write on Squidoo, you may have met Raphaelo. Raphaelo is one of the most encouraging lens masters here. He always has kind and encouraging words for everyone.
Bankok is currently facing serious and dangerous flooding- Raphaelo lives there. If you are wondering why you have not seen him recently, it is because he is among the many who have had to leave and it may be weeks before he returns.
If you have been touched by Raphaelo's kind words, please take a moment to visit and leave some warm wishes for him.
A great way to leave warm wishes for Raphaelo

- Thanks so much for this great lens about a difficult challenge. My son had aspbergers and I think we didn't handle it as well as possible. I think your suggestions would have helped a lot. I can see why you have learned to be so orderly - this kind of kid just hates chaos. You already had a blessed lens before I saw your mention of Raphaelo, then you got double blessed. I really like it when I see lensmasters (really people in general) reaching out to each other like this. I live in the SF Bay area - if you are ever around let me know and we will have a nice picnic in one of the Bay area parks!

- I don't know of any sources for this sort of material, but this is really a fantastic page. I'd think all parents and grandparents like me who live in multi-generational homes could find a lot to use here. You've really got a lot of useful stuff here. Bookmarked, and thumbs up.

- I know in the hospitals (in Toronto, Canada) we have many free resources. I shall look them up when I can at work and see if I can add to your fine list. It's so helpful to every parent (and some adults) to have these rewards given to them.
