Other stuff you might need (or want) to get started.
Ok, you have your recording software installed on your computer, now what. You need a way to get sound into the program. You need some sort of soundcard or audio interface, a microphone and a microphone pre-amplifier. Most computers have very basic soundcards built in that you can plug a computer microphone into, but these tend to be very limited. However, they will work to get a signal to the program if you just want to play around. I strongly recommend that you upgrade once you decide that you want better sounding recordings and the option to record more than one thing at a time.

- Audacity is excellent software. I've been using it for years and it does enough that I still don't have the need to buy any payware equivalent. For sample looping, I do have another application (Zero-X Seamless Looper), but other than that, Audacity will certainly take care of all your other basic audio editing needs. Guys, if you haven't tried it, I would download it and check it out. It amazes me the stuff that's available for free online these days.
I just started a new audio software related blog here myself:

- Great lens Jason! It was a flash-back for me. I think most of us in the studio business started just like this. Obviously, there's a difference between those first recordings and the stuff that can be done when you have some cash. But, for guys that are using these free tools, they will probably want to enhance their projects with some mastering. I recommend SoundOps for all my audio mastering. Great call, by the way, on the SM-58 mics - those and the 57's are so versatile, every home studio should have a few! Keep it up dude!
