Very informative. I have seen a few mystery shoppers ads recently and have wondered what it was all about.

What I would like to see is a state by state listing - 90% of the open job emails I get are not useful to me.
  • brandonmotz Apr 12, 2012 @ 7:31 pm | delete
James Martin seems to be a busy man sending out alot of emails to many people for a company that does not exist :)

I have just been in contact with Market Force and they do not use email addresses like "mforcegroups". They only use @marketforce. Any deviation from that is an attempt to deceive people into thinking that it is from Marketforce.

Also, the person I was speaking to informed me that they actually have a legal team trying to deal with these scams. People can forward copies of emails or any other suspicious communications to them for Marketforce to investigate.
  • Blanca Apr 11, 2012 @ 6:49 pm | delete
I saw this ad in a job website and sent in my application. Minutes later I received e-mail from James Martin. Asking for my information. I have been
involved in the hiring process and know that you definetely cannot ask for applicant age nor ethnic background. He promises to send cashier's check to pay me in advance for assignment. This definetely sounds like a scam.
    Glad I found your site!

Has any one completed an assignment with "Market Force" they seem legitimate yet the store themselves are putting out the product on the shelves before I can do it. Any comments!!!!
  • Cheryl Apr 9, 2012 @ 6:57 pm | delete
I have completed 3 assignments with MarketForce, I have yet to be paid, but it hasn't been long enough yet to get paid. The website that I use with them is similar to the ones used by other Mystery Shopping companies that have paid me and are legitimate. Market Force emails me when there are jobs near me that have sat around for awhile, their clients are big companies in Canada so I feel good about this one so far. The merchandising jobs are different (I can see them because I'm near them, I live in a border town) and I haven't seen them available in Canada.
  • Linda Apr 7, 2012 @ 11:15 pm | delete
I just received an "assignment" and they want to send me a check, bla, blah, blah.... the email doesn't have a company name and was signed.

Any idea about this one... I think it may be a scam.
  • brandonmotz Apr 8, 2012 @ 12:41 am | delete
Ugg sure sounds like a mystery shopping scam to me as well. I wouldn't touch that one with a ten foot pole :)

Like you noticed, a "company" that does not have a proper company email address will probably always be a scam. I Googled the name in the email mforcegroups and only got a profile for some guy who is a DJ in Isreal. Nothing about mystery shopping.

    Thank you for sharing.
  • Linda Apr 16, 2012 @ 10:08 am | delete
URGENT... be aware this is a true SCAM. I took their bait. They sent 2 very poorly counterfeited Postal Money Orders with instruction to cash them and evaluate Western Union (go figure) which included sending $1,700 of the money through Western Union to a person in Manila, Philippines. I took everything I received to post office. They were very glad to get this information in hopes that the Post Office can do something about this type of crime. They also recommended that I not reply to the email that I have since received or the text message. These criminals try to blame the victim somehow… saying they are part of the scam. PLEASE EVERYONE BE AWARE !!!
  • anne Mar 15, 2012 @ 8:37 am | delete
Hi there, is there any from your list that allow to shop in the Philippines? thanks.
  • sousababy Mar 1, 2012 @ 10:01 pm | delete
Very interesting and thank you for warning folks about the scams too.
  • Marion23 Feb 27, 2012 @ 2:23 pm | delete
Excellent lens! You've obviously put some work into it.
  • John Phelps Feb 15, 2012 @ 2:19 pm | delete
I registered to become part of a focus group in S. Florida from an ad on Craigs list. Days later I received an e-mail from a James Martins in care of a company called People Business Edge Secret Shopper asking me to re-register for the same ad as a secret shopper. They will send me a check to cash and instructions to evaluate certain companies. Have you ever heard of this company and what do you think of this scenario?
  • brandonmotz Feb 16, 2012 @ 6:49 pm | delete
    Hi John,

I tried to find anything to do with a company called People Business Edge Secret Shopper and could not find a single thing about them. Not one website, review or news press release about them. Mystery shopping companies will always have a website and reviews from people who have been paid or scammed from them.

I advise extreme caution with this one.

Like I mentioned to Regina, secret shopping companies will never pay you in advance and it will never be for large amounts. With any legitimate company you will have to do the work first then you get paid for the work you have completed. Mystery shopping jobs do not pay in advance. This way they cover their own butts and do not get scammed by people who would take the money and run.

My advice is to tear up any cheque they send you or turn it in to the police. The only person who benefits from mystery shopping scams would be the person who sent out the cheque.

    Hope this helps :)

    Hello,
Some time ago I received a check to cash in my bank account and deduct like $200.00. But I got suspicious of someone just sending me a check. I searched the web and found a scam that was going on where those checks were bounced afterwards. I just received today an email from a James Martin, People Market Edge (Market Force) to start this mystery shopping with. I'm checking the web for any complaints about this company. I don't know who to trust.
  • Regina Feb 13, 2012 @ 12:55 am | delete
I just received a $4300.00 check and correspondence from a supposed company called Mintel Intelligence in time for investigative shopping I have yet to complete. I do not believe this is legitimate. I await your comments. Thank You!
  • brandonmotz Feb 14, 2012 @ 4:39 am | delete
    Regina,

Hello there and thank you for posting your comment. I would absolutely recommended NOT attempting to cash that cheque. I will say with no uncertain terms that the cheque you received was not for mystery shopping and is a scam.

Did the cheque come with a note saying something to the effect of "Please cash this cheque and send most of it to such and such an address and you keep some for you services"?

No business person in their right mind would send some stranger a cheque for that amount and pray that that person sent them their money. Business Suicide :)

If that cheque is cashed you will have to pay the money back to the bank (since the money would have been drawn from your account) and have some very stern conversations with the police.

Best idea (in my opinion) is to take the cheque to your local police department. Perhaps they could lay down some trap to catch this person when they try to pick up the money.

I am from India and I once did mystery shopping for a company here in India called Kaiz hospitality service.I think most of the sites above don't have clients in India ,right?
  • brandonmotz Jan 12, 2011 @ 1:33 am | delete
    Hi there MridupabanKalita,

I am sorry to say that these companies focus on hiring mystery shoppers in North America.

However, I have found you a couple of companies that focus in the India market. Hope this gets you at least started.

As sort of a disclaimer for myself, I dont know anything about these companies. I found them using common keywords just like I did building this free list of companies hiring mystery shoppers in North America, but they at least look legit.

    DQS India www.dqsindia.com
    Grassroots India www.grassrootsindia.in
AQ Services Internatinal (India subsidiary) www.aq-services.com
    Shopmax www.shopmax.in
    Bare Associates India www.bareinternational.com

The last one is international, not just in India

I worked with A Closer Look in the past. They are good folks. They do want a lot for the money, however. In the end, my husband and I decided we'd rather just pay for our food lol

Thanks for going to all the work of putting this together and putting it out for free...really free. So many sites claimed to be free but 20 or 30 minutes into their spiel, Wham...they hit you with some bogus charge. Then I'm forced to take another 20 minutes to berate them for being lying, greedy bastards.
  • Pinkchic18 Nov 5, 2010 @ 9:58 am | delete
Very cool lens! Thanks for taking the time to put it together.

I have been a mystery shopper for a couple of months now and I was surprised at how easy it is. I live in the middle of no where in Montana and have to travel 60 miles to the nearest Walmart - but when I mystery shop I consider that the mystery shop is paying for my other errands and sometimes free pizza! (once I secret shopped a pizza chain)
  • juliasenesac Oct 24, 2010 @ 8:49 pm | delete
