How to get FREE reliable SMTP

I know there is a lot of free e-mail services out there but a lot of them are severely limited and crap. Also as a webmaster you prefer your own personalised email address with your own domain name in it. Most domains come with free email boxes but they have you paying for the smtp service.

Basically, if you are confused in what POP3 and SMTP are, as an internet user the explanation is simple. POP3 is what receives your email and SMTP is what sends your email. As I said earlier most domains come with the free receiving service so you can set up your own personalised email address to match your domain name, BUT if you need SMTP from these services you have to pay for them. You can of course set up your mail program to receive from your personalised address and send them out using your ISP or other free SMTP services out there. Google is one of these free services. This lens will show you how to set up your mail program to send through Google's SMTP using Outlook Express and since most windows packages use approximately the same menus and methods it should be easy to use these instructions to help you set up any mail package to send out through any SMTP you wish.

How and Why I found out about FREE SMTP

The reason I looked into getting FREE SMTP is because my own free email service wouldn't do what I wanted it to do. I had made an email to my (at the moment) small customer base, clicked send and I got the error that I had reached my limit of sends. I didn't even know that email accounts had a limit of sends. This being the case I had to find out how to send my email and fast.

The first thing I did was goto my domain provider and set up the free email account that came with my domain (I hadn't done this before because I had no real need to as I had a few free email accounts that was already in use). Once I had spent nearly an hour setting up a few different email addresses for my business I soon discovered that these email addresses only recieved (you could set up autoresponders for them) but if you need to send you had to PAY for a SMTP. After a bit of reading up on it I discovered that you could use your own SMTP that comes with your ISP (if your ISP actually gives you an email account that is) or any other SMTP for free accounts and stuff.

What is SMTP?

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail (e-mail) transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks. SMTP was first defined in RFC 821 (STD 15),RFC 821, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, J.B. Postel, The Internet Society (August 1982) and last updated by RFC 5321 (2008)RFC 5321, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, J. Klensin, The Internet Society (October 2008) which includes the extended SMTP (ESMTP) additions, and is the protocol in widespread use today. SMTP is specified for outgoing mail transport and uses port 25.

While electronic mail servers and other mail transfer agents use SMTP to send and receive mail messages, user-level client mail applications typically only use SMTP for sending messages to a mail server for relaying. For receiving messages, client applications usually use either the Post Office Protocol (POP) or the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) to access their mail box accounts on a mail server.

How to do it

The first step is to create a free googlemail account on google.

Once you have done this go to your googlemail account and click settings. Go to the Forwarding and POP tab and enable POP, then save settings.

The program I have chosen to show you how to set up your email accounts to use googles SMPT is Outlook Express. Why? Because its free with windows and is a good emailing program. It also shouldn't be too hard to adapt these instructions for other programs either.

Ok. So fire up your Outlook Express and click on Tools Accounts.

Then click on Add - Mail

Enter your name and your email address. Then on the next page add the POP address that comes with the account that you WANT the free SMTP for and then add googles SMTP in the SMTP box 'smtp.googlemail.com'

On the next page enter your Account Name and Password for the account you want the free email for and click Next then Finish.

Ok, we are now half way there. You should now be back at the Accounts dialog box. Highlight the account you have just set up and click on Properties. When the next dialog box pops up click on the Servers tab. In the Outgoing Mail Server section at the bottom of the dialog box put a tick in the My server requires authentication box and click on the Settings button

In the following dialog box click on the Log on using button and type in your google account name and password and click OK. Back in the properties dialog box select the Advanced tab and change the Server Port Numbers for the Outgoing Mail(SMTP) to 465 and make sure you tick the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box.

Providing you have done everything correctly you should now be able to send your emails using your personalised email address using Google's SMTP Server.

Very useful, thanks. The only think I'd like to remove is the 'sent via googlemail' that accompanies mail using smtp.gmail.com.
