Free Squidoo Images, Banners, and Ribbons
Introduction To Free Squidoo Images
I've used ribbons and banners in several of my lenses to dress them up and otherwise decorate the lens. Also, I've used the ribbons to link back to my lensmaster profile and or outside website. What follows is a primer on how to use the banners, as well as an offering of many free banners you may use. Here are a few examples of banners and how I used them in our lenses:
- Michael Jordan ~ Notice the banners are linking to my lensmaster profile page. Also, the banners are bordering a contest to draw attention so that you are most likely to vote! [hint, hint] :o)
- Maria Sharapova PowerShot Video~ Some pretty flowers decorating the lens. This time I linked back to another Maria Sharapova lens we've created.
- Traffic From Image Searches ~ Just a neat image expanded and used as a banner to provide a 'traffic' decoration.
The point needs to be made that banners and ribbons are used for decoration. Tagging and making them clickable may have some SEO and traffic value, however, slight.
Image Use Condition: A link back to this lens and/or my (new) blog, www.ColleenLane.com (preferred!) ~ Am I going to check for the linkback? Maybe, but probably not! Gentlemen's (gentlelady's) honor. :o) Oh, and btw, a linkback from a site OTHER than Squidoo is much appreciated!

Measuring Your Space
The first thing you want to do is measure the width of your blog, webpage, or Squidoo lens to see what landscape you have to work with on your page. Use this pixel ruler to do that:
You'll see this lens has a maximum display area of about 620 pixels. However, 580 pixels would seem to work much nicer. In fact, all the free images in this lens will be sized to 580 pixels. I've found a one-size-fits-all works well for me as most (perhaps all) Squidoo lens versions work well with a 580 pixel wide banner.
Now for the code for the ruler. You can save any of the images from this lens on your server, including this one, or leave on my server. If you need to measure your working area, just copy and paste into your lens, blog, or webpage:

HTML Image Basics
Let's take an image and use it as an example:

We've centered the image (see bold):

We've added an alt tag of Colleen Lane (hover over the image!). The code, again see bold highlighting the added code:

I hope the transgression and the highlighted code helps gain at least a novice level of html for images. The good news is I've already done the code for you. You'll simply need to copy and paste, however, I wanted you to know the basics in case you want to alter things a bit. Also, hardly anyone writes code anymore. If you want to do a little html coding, try starting with a free html editor like www.nvu.com
