History of tattooing

The history of tattooing goes back farther than human memory; humans have been tattooing each other from the very beginning, since we started cooking food with fire.

The first human that they ever found that was tattooed was the iceman they found in the Italian Alps, they where speculating that they where for medicinal purposes to alleviate back pain because of the strategic location of them. But shortly after that, the same year they found a woman in Siberia that was heavily tattooed, a high priestess and she was also buried to ice and they found her probably through global warming, she had tattooed arms and legs mostly with animal designs, probably having something to do with an ancient religion.

We do know from other historical writings that tattooing has been practiced all over the world by every culture even into modern times, there are aboriginal people still practicing the same type of tattooing that was being done back then.

We have a modern version of that same process we use electricity and machines to tattoo but the idea and feeling of it is still the same as it was in ancient times, the same desire to decorate is just as present as it was then, for a variety of different reasons, to memorialise someone whose passed or for purely aesthetic reasons.

Tattoo FAQs

Things you need to know before getting a tattoo

Does Getting A Tattoo Hurt?

Probably the most common question that gets asked "Does it Hurt & How Much"

Tattoo pain is a feeling like any other feeling which humans have a curtain degree of control over, part of its psychological and part of its psychical and that sensation of pain especially regarding tattoos is relative depending on the persons life experiences, if you are a younger person and you really have not experienced too much discomfort in your life, then it's going to be the most painful thing you've ever experienced, but of course for somebody that has been around a little while and endured some discomfort it probably will not be too bad.

There are some ways around the physical pain, topical anesthetics are sometimes used for cosmetic tattooing and there are some topical anesthetics that can be applied to broken skin that is getting so sore that finishing the tattoo would be unbearable without it, however there are some side affects, most of the after care products contain epinephrine a synthetic adrenaline which can inhibit the blood supply to the area and have an impact on the healing process making it heal longer and harder, you may lose some colour using a topical anaesthetic, also there is a variety of other chemicals in the anaesthetic that could give you a bad reaction, typically your bodies natural anesthetics that your body produces in response to any injury is the best anaesthetic of all, also a lot of it is psychological so being in a good mood and keeping yourself focused and distracted properly is the best way to handle pain.

I have created this chart below to give you an idea where the most painful places are to get a tattoo.

Tattoo Pain Chart

Should I Get A Tattoo?

The fact your reading this means that either yourself or someone you know is considering getting a tattoo. Please note however that 1/3 of people that get tattoos regret them. So you have to be very very sure that you want one and what to get. Tattoo removal is very expensive and expect to have a really nasty scar afterwards. Think cafefully where you want to have your tattoo, will it be easy to hide if you want or need to. Getting a tattoo on your neck or hands might be cool when your young to show off to your friends but try to think of what you will be doing in 5 to 10 years time, you may want to work somewhere that might be difficult with tattoos in exposed places.

What Questions Should I Ask The Tattoo Artist?

Tattoo shops can be pretty intimidating the first time you walk into one, the tattoo artist themselves will almost certainly be covered in tattoos, in fact I would be a little worried if they weren't. The shop will have flash images which will be on display but these are just illustrations of tattoos and are usually purchased from other artists.

If they are not busy ask if it's possible to have a chat with them, or arrange a better time to come back.

1. Can I See Your Collection Of Photos?
These will be photos of tattoos that they have done. If you ask this they will probably know straight away that you know a little bit about tattoos.

2. What Tattoos Do You Enjoy Doing?
Most tattoo artists will enjoy and specialise on a certain type of tattoo be it, dragons, portraits etc.

3. How Long Have You Been Tattooing?
Just because they have only been tattooing for a short amount of time does not mean they are not great artists, use your judgement by looking at any photos of tattoos they have done and in most cases you will get a reduced hourly rate from someone still learning, but bear in mind this can be a gamble.

Build a rapport but don't overstay your welcome tattoo artists can be very busy, after chatting with them for a while you should feel comfortable and at ease with them, if not then maybe this isn't the right place for you.

Tattoo Books On Amazon

Japanese Tattoo

Imagine life-size Polaroid photographs. Imagine traditional, Japanese, full-body tattooing. Imagine a book of life-size Polaroids taken of traditional, full-body, Japanese tattoos.... this IS that book! Sandi Fellman got the proper introductions and a great toy (a Polaroid that really takes life-size plates) when she went to Japan and set out to document the hidden world of the irezumi, the tattoo underground. This collection is almost all traditional hand-executed tattooing. The details are unparallelled, and you get to see all kinds of shading you might not notice at a distance. This type of body modification still is a secret, private practice in Japan and to view images of this quality is rare.

Tattoos

I love everything about this book! It's called a "paperback" but it's not your run-of-the-mill paperback. Sure, it has a soft cover, but it has a really solid feel to it. If fact, the tactile sensation of this book is much akin to that of a soft bound Bible. So why not think of this book as a Tattoo Bible? But rather than being cluttered with endless Words, this Good Book offers 265 awesome illustrations!

Recommended to anyone interested in tattoo art, pop art, Kitsch, or just good old fashioned well crafted drawings.

Ink:
The Not-Just-Skin-Deep Guide to Getting a Tattoo

Easy to read, this book offered a real introduction and some interesting background to the world of tattoos. It has whetted my appetite to find out more and was really helpful when going through my first tattoo choice and aftercare. I would recommend highly if you are considering a tattoo, or planning your next to be a bit bolder! I would also see it as useful to help inform choices made my offspring if they were set on getting a tattoo as soon as legally possible.

Tattoo Magazines On Amazon

Tattoo

Many people ...moan about the articles in this magazine, it is really unfortunate that no one is interested in the tattoo culture as much as the tattoos themselves. I am a collector of tattoos (12 and still going strong), but why get tattoos without knowing about advancements in tattooing, or the awesome people that do it. People who have tattoos should really enjoy the articles, and the people that keep tattooing alive. The culture is as entertaining as the pictures, and if you don't apreciate that than you shouldn't get tattoos. Respect those that make a living sharing their art with the world, don't be close minded and expect only pictures, that's not tattoing or the tattoo world. This is an excellent magazine and I would suggest it to any one!!

Tattoo Burst

This magazine is one of my favorite tattoo mags I've seen; I've been getting tattooed since '90, been tattooing since '99, and have seen PLENTY of the mags to compare it to. Although the price is a bit steep & unless you can read japanese you can't read the text it's still a great magazine to look at. It is hands down the BEST mag available to see japanese style tattooing, as well as some traditional American-style as well. It's also got MUCH more pages & pictures than any other tattoo magazines, so the price balances out a bit. If you like japanese-style tattoos you should definately pick this up; the high price is worth it; I'd buy this any day over any of the american or other magazines out there.
