Illustrate Your Dreams

Rather than find pictures in magazines, or spend money to have someone create and host a vision board online, I've come up with the idea of making them on Squidoo for fun and possibly profit.

If you've never heard of a vision board, dream board, or treasure map, it's a process where you collect pictures of what you want in your life and create a collage out of it. The theory is that if you make this and then place it someplace where you see it often the things will start to be attracted into your life. They can be done as an individual, couple, family, group, etc. They can be made about your entire life or a single event or object or even a feeling you want more of.

I've highlighted some other sources here that can help you learn more about what a vision board is. It has become popularized in the last couple of years by first The Secret and then Oprah. They are usually found as part of the philosophy called The Law of Attraction which isn't new but is enjoying a major renaissance.

Honestly, i've made them over the years but they either haven't come true or they've somehow been warped in the time-space continuum and what I want happens to people I know instead of me. But I so want them to work! I love to read stories about how they work for other people. And so I thought why not try a Squidoo Vision Board?

One thing about it, it makes you really think about what you want. I have a hard time making decisions at all so fine tuning my desires down to pictures available on Flickr is a challenge. At the same time it's a lot more fun than trying to think about it. And I suspect more accurate in the end.

Update

I created this lens on January 26, 2009.

I can't say that many of my wished for things happened until after July 19, 2009 when CCGAL left a comment here asking me to update the lens to let readers know which things had come true.

On July 25-27, 2009 I found myself in Door County, Wisconsin,. A friend suggested on July 22 - out of the blue - that we take a road trip. I wasn't sure we would make it as far as Door County.

I became a Reiki Master on August 8, 2009. Again, it was an opportunity that only came up about a week ahead of time.

On August 14, 2009 I found a ten dollar bill on my lawn.

On August 15, 2009 I spent 5 hours at a Lake Michigan beach again (a 12 hour drive round trip). Most of the gas money to get there was given to me as a surprise gift the day before.

Steps to Create Your Own Squidoo Vision Board

See what mine looks like further along in this lens...

  1. Decide on your topic.
(You might want to use Google Adwords or Worktracker to help you attract more visitors to your lens. The more visitors the more chance you have of creating revenue from your lens.)
  2. Create your lens.
  3. Look for photos on Flickr or Photobucket or elsewhere that illustrate your dream.
They don't have to be literal. Think of other images that would describe your dream. That's where it gets to be fun and creative for me. And be sure to use images that are licensed with Creative Commons. Stealing images is not good karma and therefore would probably work against you.
  4. Use text modules to place your images and add text.
The HTML code I used to place my images the way I did is this:

    <p align="center"><a href="http://www.LINK BACK TO IMAGE PAGE.com"><img src="http://www.COPY IMAGE LOCATION.jpg" /></a></p>
    <"p align="center"><i>Image courtesy of <a href="http://www.LINK BACK TO IMAGE PAGE.com">NAME OF IMAGE CREATOR</a> on Flickr.</i></p>.

You can just copy the code and replace the capitalized portions with what is described.
  5. Create separate modules for different subthemes of your main topic.
  6. You could add other modules like Ebay and Amazon to list items related to the things that you want. Go crazy! Have fun! The experts say that the more positive feelings you have around the things you want the faster they will come to you. Or you can keep it simple.
  7. Use more text modules to describe the things you want to have happen as though they are happening right now. This is part of the Visioning process and is further described in Write It Down, Make It Happen.

Visioning: Ten Steps to Designing the Life of Your Dreams

This book was published in 2000 by a woman who has been working with Vision Boards long before they became a common catch phrase in the personal development world. This book is not just about cutting out pictures and putting them into a collage. It outlines a comprehensive process for using them as a whole system for creating the life of your dreams.

Theory #1

I suspect that the more people see your vision board, the more energy is attracted to it, and the more likely it is to happen. So Squidoo is perfect!

The Vision Board

The Vision Board: The Secret to an Extraordinary Life

It's the first book of it's kind.

Theory #2

Hey, wait....what if ALL Squidoo lenses are really vision boards?

Write It Down, Make It Happen

Another pre-Secret pathfinding book

Another way to amp up your manifesting work is to write down what you want as though you have it right now, in as much detail as possible. This book is inspiring and easily readable and tells you exactly how to write your dreams down.

I've had this book since it was first published in 2001 and it is one of my all time favorites. It doesn't hurt that I like to write.

When the idea for this lens hatched in my mind right before Christmas 2008, the first thing I thought of was "I want roses - lots of roses throughout 2009". It seemed to me that roses would be a fairly easy thing for whoever is behind this manifesting stuff to well, manifest. But not so easy for me to get.

Roses are a powerful symbol for me. I love to look at them and their scent is one of my favorites. I even like to draw them. ((Click here to go to my lens about How to Draw a Rose.)

Briar Rose Bed & Breakfast in Boulder, Colorado

I just found the B&B of my dreams, I think. See more about it here: Briar Rose Bed & Breakfast It is an "eco-hotel" and some of the amenities include "cookie jar...filled with fresh shortbread butter cookies, unlimited tea service (lots of varieties), big organic breakfast, organic sheets, wi-fi or USB ports, etc." There are many recipes on the website, too.

But mainly, just look at the place! i can't get over the green and lavender common rooms.

I love it!! Did you see my book review lens on The Vision Board book? I put a photo of my own vision board on the lens.
Now, with that said, I moved July 1 of this year and my board is still on the wall in my mom's basement by my bed. I need to take it down and bring it here as the visions are still the same....some are realized.

I might make my own lens of it....noting what's realized and what is still to be realized.

How exciting! Thank you for the update and for letting me know about it! I may have to join you and make a vision board of my own on Squidoo now. Good job, very interesting lens.

I like your idea of using Squidoo as a vision board. On a personal note, I would very much like to have some narratives about what came about in your life as a result of having made this vision board lens - I realize 2009 is only half over, but surely something has happened as a result.

Some of your flicker photos are unavailable, by the way. Nice job!
