Squidoo was created by a fellow marketer - Seth Godin - who developed a community where, not only could you position yourself as an expert, but you could openly promote products and services as well (something MySpace and other web 2.0 communities don't allow).

This is a free community and if you've ever built a lens, you know how easy the 4-step wizard is to get up and running in a period of 5 minutes or less. But there's a little more to using Squidoo for free web site traffic than setting up a basic lens and leaving it alone.

The key to generating free website traffic on Squidoo is to get it ranking high in the search engines.

As Tiffany Dow explains in Social Networking on Squidoo, which has been endorsed by "King of Traffic" John Reese, there's no rock solid guarantee that your lens will get on page 1 of the Google SERPs.

But many people have optimized their lens to gain a high PageRank in Google, which means that search engine gives it a lot of points for being a true authority site.

If it's optimized, through the use of quality content, a clean layout, and proper tags, then the lens has a good shot of funneling free traffic to your page when users go online to type something into the Google search box.

Long-tail keywords tend to perform better than broad ones. If your lens URL, title, and content is focused and narrow about a topic (Japanese maple trees, for instance), it has a great chance of competing for page 1 of the Google SERPs - as opposed to someone whose lens simply targets "trees."
