The Red Ring Of Death
The Red Ring of Death may not be making as many headlines as it used to, but that doesn't mean it's not still out there, lurking in the shadows, and waiting to strike down your beloved 360 console.Your Xbox 360 probably means a lot to you: it's a friend when you're lonely, a conduit to a world of entertainment, a way to prove your gaming skills to millions of strangers on the leaderboards and around the world. So what do you do when all of a sudden, the green glow of your console turns red?
Apparently, a third of all the Xbox 360 consoles that were produced have a problem with the soldering of the GPU and CPU to the motherboard, once the temapature reaches a certain degree the motherboard bends,the soldering can become loose, and this prevents contact with the CPU and GPU. This is actually a well known problem on older units. Once this happens, you will be greeted by the infamous The Red Ring of Death.
As a result of all the issues, Microsoft finally released a statement about the three red lights and its related hardware failure in June 2007, promising to fix all XBox 360s that die as a result of the failure for free and extending their warranty out to three years.
If you are ever faced with the Xbox 360 3 red light error, you should call Microsoft and check to see if it is still under warranty and then send it back to be fixed - or should you?
Due to the overwhelming number of owners who have had to return their XBox 360s to Microsoft for repair or replacement, wait times for getting the Xbox back can frequently extend into months. Some fans who have waited two months to get their console back only to find another hardware failure crop up after another couple of weeks of serious video game play. In addition to this, you will need to pay upto $140 for shipping and handling charges.
So what is the alternative?
Apart from sending the console back to Microsoft to have it fixed, the only solution is to open up your console and repair it yourself.
Type in the phrase 'fix red ring of death' into google and you will find plenty of websites covering the issue. Many people have been claiming to have fixed their consoles by doing things like wrapping their XBox with towels to reduce the overheating. However, whilst this method may temporarily fix the problem, there have been reports that the problem just comes back after a few days. There are many free tutourials and vides available which all claim to show you how to fix the Red ring of Death, but personally I wouldnt trust most of them.
Once you have made the decision to fix the problem yourself and open up the console, then your warranty will become void. If you are going to try and fix it yourself, you need to be sure that the guide you follow is 100% correct or you could cause more damage to the console itself. The last thing you want is to completely destroy your XBox because you followed some random video instructions on YouTube made by a 13 year old kid. Now, I have nothing against 13 year old kids, but I think it would be more sensible to actually use a legitimate guide.
Like the saying goes - you get what you pay for, and I would advise in actually paying for a 'proper' repair guide. www.3redlightfix.com and www.threeredlightsfix.com are good places to start if you want to have a go at DIY repairing.

I found this this forum thread the other day which invites you to take part in a scheme which apparently helps you get a load of 2 months XBox Live membership for free.Its basically a chain letter scam scheme and the only person who ever gets anything out of it is the guy at the top. These scams have been going around for years and come in different variations and a common attempt to con you out of money.
It is something along the lines of "send a 2 month xbox live subscription to this address and add yourself to the bottom of the list. In two weeks you will have hundreds of xbox live codes for free!".
They don't work. They are normally illegal. You won't get anything from them.

It's actually been a while since I updated this Squidoo lense, and it's cool to see it's had an interesting response judging by some of the comments left.When I first made this page back in Feburary it was never intended to be a blog, just a short little description about getting free xbox live codes. The information is a bit dated now, so I think it would be cool if I tried to update on a regular basis. I love playing the 360 virtually everyday, so hey I may as well write about something I love doing.
So Ive decided that this will be my new blog and this is my first post. Welcome.

Gears of War - The Best Game In the World?
Thursday 23rd October
Gears of War is probably my most favourite game in the world. I only ever play two 2 games regularly - Gears is one of them. I bought a secondhand Xbox 360 in March 2007 and Gears and Call of Duty 3 were the two games that came with it. Since then, Gears has hardly left the sliding tray of my console. I sold COD 3 after about 1 week.
Don't get me wrong I've played other games too, mostly shoot em ups such as Halo 3, Unreal Tournament and Rainbow Vegas. But you know what? They simply dont compare to Gears of War. More specifically, they pale in comparison when it comes to multiplayer online. I've spent countless hours playing Annex matches whilst sitting on my sofa with a bag of crisps.
For me, I think what separates Gears to other similar shooters is the way the characters are set in third person perspective. I prefer this a lot more than playing in the first person. Now, Call of Duty 4 is a brilliant game, but I think it would be even better in third person. When playing a game in first person, all you can see is your weapon - what fun is that? Controlling a character is much better. What makes Gear of War stand out, is the pleasure of seeing your character front rolling into a locust and blasting a shot gun into his head. Or how about the satisfaction of seeing your chainsaw cutting a big rip into an annoying newbie opponent online who glithces all the time? You dont get that in Call of Duty 4.
I guess its the extra visual impact that a third person perspective can give you. Dont get me wrong, there are crap third person shooters too, but Gears is done so well. Everything is so slick. The way the characters run, roll, duck and dive and the way they are controlled is superb.
Here's another example of why I love Gears of War. Each of Cog characters have their own favourite catchphrases they repeat during online matches. If you play the game a lot then you probably know them all by now. Its nothing new in games, but if you have been playing the game for as long as I have, you may have noticed that on some very special occasions, the characters will say something new that you've never heard before!
A couple of weeks I was playing the character of Cole in an Annex Game and imagine my surpise when he suddenly piped up "My bad!" I have never heard him say anything like that ever before in the 18 months Ive been playing the game.
Has anyone else had this happen before? This was only my second time of this happening in all my time playing Gears of War, and I think its very cool. To think that Epic Games developed Gears so that new additional characters commments were programmed for later use like this is amazing. Some of you non Gears fans may be wondering why Im gettting so excited about some additional character comments. But it's all about the details. What does Master Chief say? Not a lot.
