We can't always take the ideal pictures, to use on our websites and other works, ourselves so it's handy to know just where we can go to get free pictures to download and use on our web pages and in presentations etc.
The following sites should provide a good starting place if you are looking for free pictures to use online.

Stock.XCHNG - This has to be one of my favorite free stock photo sites. Searching and browsing the site is easy, and they include a lightbox, which is a handy way to save the royalty free stock photos so that you can easily find and use them later. Stock.XCHNG also has some great free photo editing tutorials which are well worth looking at.

Morguefile - Morguefile is another of my favorite sites for free stock photos to download, there is a good search facility or you can simply browse by category.
The site offers royalty free high resolution stock photos for either corporate or public use and there is no need to register to download the free images.

Openphoto - The site is uncluttered and the completely royalty free photos are grouped by category, there is also a search function. You don't need to register on the site to download the free stock photos, but if you want to upload your own photos you need to register for an account.

Public Domain Photos - just what it says on the tin! The photos on this site are all public domain free photos and so are free to use for any purpose. The images are arranged by category and there is also a good search function. You will also find a section offering free clip art images here.

We met Charlie the Croc in The Gambia - He is real and you can get up close and stroke him if you have the nerve. The Gambians keep him well fed on his favourite food (fish) so he doesn't feel the need for an extra tasty snack! :)

Imagebase - You can use the free stock photos on Imagebase for whatever you want! Their royalty free photos are free to use for personal, commercial or non-profit purposes, and are licensed under a Creative Commons license. Free high resolution photoss are also available in two formats (1600 x 1200 or 3072×2048).



vintage war poster womanHistorical Stock Photos - I love this site for all of those royalty free vintage photos! If you need American history photos free, take a look here. You will find a fantastic collection of royalty free historical photos to download for for use in Personal Websites. The code to embed the images into your website is even provided so just find the photo that you like and copy the code on your web page.
The photos include paintings and vintage posters and are categorized, with a search function.



trout fishFree Digital Photos - have a good search function and the free stock photos are grouped nicely into categories for easy browsing. Linkbacks are requested if you use any of their photos but the photos are all free to download and use on your web site.
There is an option to purchase a high resolution version of the photograph for use in print or graphic design.


medical equipment stethoscopeFreepixels - this sites free stock photos include a collection of free corporate type photos. It has a search function, categories, and a tag cloud, so finding an image is easy. There are also some good free background images here.

Stockvault - there are thousands of free stock photos on this site, as well as some nice textures, backgrounds and 3D renders. Stockvault also has some handy Photoshop tutorials. You don't have to sign up to be able to download the free photos but membership is free and gives some additional features, such as a lightbox. All images on the site are free for non commercial use.

Unprofound - this is a somewhat different site in that the free stock photos are grouped by color, rather than category. There is however a search function. Their collection of royalty free photos can be used for your projects in just about any way you like. It isn't necessary to register but if you do it allows you to create a free online portfolio, and to contribute to the collection.

Geek Philosopher has many categories, and all the photos are royalty free. There's no registration. They do request that you link back if you use one of their free stock photos, but otherwise, there's little restriction. In addition to photos, they offer backgrounds and wallpaper.

Photo Rogue offer something different, they take online requests for particular photos. Their crew of photographers will actually go out and take your photo for you, for free. I haven't tried out the request feature and a request isn't guaranteed acceptance but it is a great concept!

Remember that royalty free photos

are not necessariliy free to use, it just means that you don't have to pay the owner a royalty every time you use them.

Finding Free Stock Photos Online And Making Web Pages Made Me Want To Get My Own Digital Camera!

You don't have to spend a lot an your first digital camera, see if you can grab a bargain...

It should be possible to find the perfect photo for free but there is nothing like the satisfaction of taking your own fantastic picture and using it on your website!
It is only since I started to build these web pages that I became interested in digital photography enough to buy my own camera.
Unless you are thinking of getting into digital photography in a big way, your first digital camera doesn't have to be expensive! Choose a camera that you can take with you where ever you go. One that is small enough to fit in your pocket or purse so that you have it on hand when you need it!
Learn about taking your own photos first and then, if you like what you are doing, you can upgrade to something better.

Its worth spending a little time looking for the right royalty free photo for your needs.

Freerange requires registration before you can download their free high stock photos and textures. There are no categories for browsing but there is a search function. They also invite you to make requests, as they have many images that aren't online yet. They also claim to share ad revenue with photographers but not having tried it I can't vouch for that.

Nations Illustrated showcases pictures from around the world with over 7,000 free stock photos in its collection. Browse by city, or country, or continent. Good search function, and a site-wide index.

Freefoto is made up of 117600 free stock photos with 153 sections organized into 3285 categories. There's a search function, and usage is unrestricted. Just include an attribution link back to Freefoto. The site offers images that are free for on-line use, with higher quality versions available for sale.

Every Stock Photo is a search engine for free stock photos, and it searches many of the sites listed here. Search options allow you to specify license type. I recommended trying it out.

Cepolina has photo descriptions in 17 languages, and the ability to browse photos using maps of the world, including specific European countries. You can also browse by category, and use a search function.
Over 8000 free stock photos are available for download for private or commercial use and each photo can be saved in five formats (up to 1024X768 pixels)

Woophy is a community for travel photographers, sharing their royalty free photos with the world and takes Cepolina's map concept a little bit further: the home page is a giant map of the world! Every dot on the map represents photos taken at that location. Definitely worth a visit.

Abstract Influence requires registration in order to enter the site, but once you're in, you can upload or download, and participate in the forum, all for free. This is a very community-oriented site. Free Stock Photos are grouped by category.

Kave Wall is a fantastic source of free close-up and macro photography. There isn't a great deal here but what is here is categorized, easy to browse and excellent quality. Worth looking at.

Do You Need Something Different Such As Free Gothic, Angel Or Fairy Stock Photos?

You Won't Find Unusual Free Stock Photos On Every Site But They Certainly Can Be Found...

Photo Rack has a huge collection of categorised royalty free photos. Categories are broken down into subcategories, but there is no search function. No registration required and there is no ability to upload, but downloading is easy.

Design Packs is a small but nice collection of images. They are grouped into packages of 15 images which can be downloaded as a zip file. The images in each package are themed. Great for those looking for "abstract" images for backgrounds.

Imageafter has over 20,000 textures and images available. Imageafter also allows you to use their images on printed material for resale.

Pixel Perfect Digital has a small but growing collection of royalty free photos on its site. Registration allows you to upload to your own personal gallery. The search function allows you to search within one or more category.

Free Stock Photos is a small site containing good quality royalty free photos in both low and high resolution versions. The free hotos are grouped into categories. The search function uses Google, which doesn't work well for images here.

A database of over 3,600,000 freely usable media files.

Wikipedia Commons have a database of almost 3.5 million freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute.

If you are trying this for the first time, you may want to start with Featured pictures, Quality images or Valued images until you find your way around.

Definately worth looking at as it features lots of image which are free and in the public domain because their copyright has expired.
