About this Lens

This lens is suited for complete beginners with little or no knowledge. Beginning with the Adwords Starter Edition, I will guide you through the setup of your account and help you take the first steps to advertising your business online with one of the most powerful advertising programmes around! Google Adwords

If you are a complete beginner then read on. If you already have an adwords account please go to my other lenses:

Adwords for Beginners - using the starter edition
You have setup your account but now you need to set up a campaign using the starter edition
I have a campaign but I need help!
You have been using adwords for a short time, but need to ask some questions
Take me to the Adwords Resources
You're an expert but you are interested in honing your skills

Step 1 : Prepare to setup!

imageBefore you start to set your campaign - there is certain information that you will need in order to setup

The Adwords system times out if you take too long to set up, which means starting from the beginning again which is highly irritating!!

# A website!!! unless you are PPC Affiliate

# Your name or company name

# an email account so that you can receive the Google confirmation email and alerts. This email is also what you will use to log in to your account

# your TAX ID or VAT details if you are setting up a company account - You cannot change your tax or VAT information at a later date so this is very important!

# A credit or charge card to activate the account - you will be charged £5/$10 or equivalent as a setup fee

Some Sample Text to set up your first ad!

Google Adwords will not let you complete the setup unless you have some sample text to put in to your ad.

Take some time to think about your product or service. If you are not sure then do some searches online to see what other ads say - don't copy them directly, just get an idea of what you want to say.

You don't have to get it right first time, this is just to set up the account. You can go back in to the Google Adwords control panel and change the text later

For your first Ad you will need:

adwords text

Keep this lens open while you setup then cut and paste

A Headline of 25 Letters
Some text to explain your product
or service in 70 letters or less
www.yourdomaingoeshere.com

Some Sample Keywords!

Keywords or keyphrases are the words that a person uses while they are searching on Google. 'Squidoo' is an example of a keyword, while 'Adwords Training' is an example of a keyword phrase.

Google Adwords won't allow you to complete the setup without at least one keyword. Again, you don't have to worry about these at this stage, just type in your company name if you are not sure and we can go back and add more later.

step2

Step 2 : Go to the Adwords Login Page and start the setup procedure

step2Click here to go to the Google Adwords Login

When you get to the login screen click on the button on the top right that says 'START NOW'

Step 3 : Choose the Starter Edition

Step 4 : Setup your Ad

1. Location and Language

step4
In order to setup your starter ad, you will need the details mentioned in section 1.

If you do not want to locate a single location leave the location box blank - you can go back and edit this setting at any time.

A Headline of 25 Letters
Some text to explain your product
or service in 70 letters or less

Step 6 : Setup your Ad

3. Choose Keywords

step6You will need to know the full web addresss of the page or website you want to link to (eg http://www.squidoo.com)

You will also need to create an ad using the preparation steps at the beginning of this article - you can go back and edit this setting at any time.

Step 7 : Setup your Ad

4. Choose Your Currency

step7Once you have chosen this setting it is not possible to change it, so think about which currency you want to use. You can set up other campaigns for other currencies later

Step 8 : Setup your Ad

5. Choose your budget

step8The amount you set for your budget is the maximum amount you will be charged in any given month.

Be realistic though, if you are targetting a competitive area where it costs $2 a click - setting a budget of $10 a day means that the system can only show your ads a few times a day before your budget is used up.

Step 9 : Setup Your Ad

6. Future Contact

step8This is where you add your contact details. Don't worry, you're not going to receive any spam or constant Google emails, but it is important to receive alerts when your ads aren't showing.

step8

Set Up Account

step10All you need to do now is pick your login email and create your account to get started! If you already use Google services, you can use your existing login.

Terrific lens on helping people get started with Google Adwords. I love the way you've put them in a step-by-step manner, and each step is illustrated with a screenshot. Excellent stuff!
