Finding a Profitable Niche
(and what is a niche market anyways?)
Affiliate marketing can seem overwhelming at first glance, and without a focused plan success will elude you. So, first thing's first: When starting a new venture it's critical to focus on a targeted niche market.
So, what is a niche market? Basically, a niche market is narrow, highly specific, focused segment of the market. It's a targeted group of people looking for a solution to a shared problem, or to meet a very specific need.
How do I find a niche market? Finding a niche market requires diligent research in the following areas:
1. Have a clear picture of who you're marketing to.
2. Have a product or service that provides answers or solutions to your target audience.
3. Find a market that has enough interest to support your product.
4. Provide a product you have passion about.
Though not 100% necessary, you will find your life more enjoyable and your business growing faster if you choose a topic you're passionate about. To Dominate a Niche Market, Choose a niche product you are knowledgeable about: It increases your enthusiasm and will send a message to your readers that you're talking directly to them and gives a message of trust. The more trust a customer has means more profit in your pocket.
Be very clear about WHO you're marketing to, and provide answers and solutions to the needs of that target market. Satisfy the needs and interests of your target market and your niche will keep you happy, healthy and profitable.

Conducting Keyword Research
Learn this well, it can make you or break you.

Keyword research is the single most critical element of creating a sustainable and profitable business in affiliate marketing. The Golden Keyword Rule: It's usually best not to go after those heavily searched, high competition phrases. In fact, you can really find some diamonds by going after what are called long tail keywords.
So what is a long tail keyword, why should I use them, and how can I find them?
Glad you asked.
Long tail keywords are keywords or search phrases that are highly specific, and usually contain three words or more. For example, "digital camera" would not be considered a long tail keyword because its not very specific, and likely has an obscene amount of competing web pages/advertisers. However, something like "Canon EOS Digital SLR Review" would likely yeild you much better results.
Why use long tail keywords? Basically, they have much less competition, so your website, blog, ad, or lens has a greater chance of receiving exposure for that keyword. In addition to paying less for your PPC ads, you will receive consistent organic search engine traffic from using these keywords.
Finding Good Keywords -- There is wide range of options and tools available to you, each with its own advantages and quirks. These tools can help you choose the right keywords to target based on competition and search volume. Here are some of the most important:
