The boonie hat was introduced during the Vietnam War, when U.S. Army Green Berets began wearing them in the fields. It is still in use today.

This pattern is dedicated to U.S. Army soldiers...

Materials
1/2 oz. camouflage worsted weight yarn
Size H crochet hook
Fiberfill stuffing

Size: 1" tall
Gauge: 2 rounds of dc=1"

Note: Weave in ends as work progresses.

Top of hat
Rnd 1: Ch 4, join w sl st in 1st ch to form ring, ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join w sl st in top of ch 3 (12 dc).
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in next dc and in each dc around, join w sl st in top of ch 3 (24 dc).
Rnd 3: (Work this round in back loops only), ch 3, dc in each dc around, join as before (24 dc).
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, join as before (24 dc).
Rnd 5: (Work this round in front loops only), ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in next dc and in each dc around, join as before, fasten off (48 dc).
Bottom of hat
Rnd 1: Attach yarn to unused back loops between Rnds 4 and 5, ch 3, dc in each dc back loop around, join as before (24 dc).
Stuff hat.
Rnd 2: Dc dec across 1st 2 dcs, *dc dec across next 2 dc, rep from * around, join as before, fasten off, leaving a 12" length of yarn for sewing (12 dc).
Weave length of yarn through tops of Rnd 2 of bottom of hat, pull to close hole, secure.
