Free Betsy Ross Hat Pincushion Crochet Pattern

A mob cap, like Betsy Ross's, was worn publicly by females. To be found capless in colonial times was to be found in a state of undress! Mob caps served to protect the hair from smoke, grease and dust. They also covered the dirty hair that colonials rarely washed!

Free Betsy Ross Hat Pincushion Crochet Pattern

Materials
1 oz white worsted weight yarn
Size H crochet hook
Small amount fiberfill stuffing

Size: 1 1/2" tall
Gauge: 2 rounds of dc=1"

Note: Weave in ends as work progresses.

Rnd 1: Make ring (or ch 4, join w sl st in 1st ch to form ring. I prefer the "magic ring" method), ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join w sl st in top of ch 3 (12 dc).
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in next dc and in each dc around, join as before (24 dc).
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, join as before (24 dc).
Rnd 4: (Work this round in back loops only!). Dc dec over 1st 2 dc, * dc dec over next 2 dc, rep from * around, join as before, fasten off, leaving a 12" length of yarn for sewing (12 dc).

Ruffle
Join yarn w sl st in any free front loop between Rnds 3 and 4, ch 3, 5 dc in same loop, 6 dc in next loop and in each loop around, join as before, fasten off (144 dc).

Stuff hat. Close hole by weaving sts around bottom of Rnd 4, pull and secure.
