The New Guide to Knitting and Crocheting

Marie Jane Cooper

Originally published in 1847 this book is free to download on the kindle. If you do not have a kindle you can find it free online via the Gutenberg project.

This book is split in 2 parts - 1. Knitting and 2. Crochet. For this review I will concentrate on the Crochet section of the book.

The New Guide to Knitting & Crochet

Amazon Price: (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

This book includes picture diagrams which assist in visually capturing what you will be working on. It is well converted in the Kindle version and the pictures show up nicely.

The crochet section starts with introducing the stitches you will need in the projects which follow.

Stitches include:
Raised Crochet
Chain Open Crochet
Single Open Crochet
Double Open Crochet
Treble Open Crochet
Treble Vandyke Open Crochet

Although no actual diagrams are included for the stitches introduced they do include a couple of samples in the introduction in the Crochet Collar which you will be making. I looked up these terms on Youtube and found videos for the Raised stitch also known as the Relief stitch.

If you have an older relative or friend who crochets you might ask them for assistance in deciphering the written instructions for these stitches. As I read the instructions I can envision the stitch but still have questions to the exact instructions being given. *Advanced Crocheter*

Do You Use Crochet Patterns on a Kindle?

I just recently started

Earlier this year I started uploading pdf patterns and eBooks to my Kindle. I love how I can just carry the Kindle wherever I'm going along with my yarn and hook and start or restart a project. The bookmarking feature is helpful to me as well as the note section.

I am so thankful that this wonderful book has been shared with us. There are many crochet stitches I do not know how to do and am hoping this will help me with that.

I made several afghans as Christmas gifts years ago. However, it's been almost 10 years since I've crocheted, so I think I'll check some of these out for a refresher. Thanks for sharing!

Afghans-blankets are lovely gifts but tend to take me weeks. My latest one has actually taken me years - hmmm since 2009. I'm glad to say though it is almost done and I'm forcing myself to complete it.
