Come Join The Fun In Pendleton on June 27, 2009 at Veterans Park
Freedom Fest in Pendleton South Carolina is traditionally held the Saturday before the 4th of July. This may sound strange to some people but there are several reasons that it is done this way. The main reason is that the first Freedom Fest was held in 1990, the year our town celebrated it's 200th birthday, and the date chosen was June 30th which was the Saturday before July 4th on Wednesday. The other reason is that celebrations were already established for July 4th in neighboring towns and many Pendletonians were involved with these festivals. We also considered the fact that many families take their vacation during the week of the 4th. Approximately 100 volunteers are needed to make Freedom Fest a success so it seemed logical to keep the date as the Saturday before July 4.
So in Pendleton we begin our celebration of our Nation's Independence a week early and we do it with great pride and patriotism.

Who Organizes Freedom Fest?
Let me start by giving you a little background information about how Freedom Fest got started.Teri Sloan, Town of Pendleton Administrator, began this celebration in 1990 - the Town's Bicentennial. Budget strains unfortunately prevented the town from continuing this project after 2003. To keep this wonderful tradition alive, in 2004 Fred Hamilton and Rick Moore of Pendleton Home Builders and Pendleton Real Estate decided to take it on. They planned, organized and secured sponsorships from interested community members such as Ken Rowland of State Farm Insurance, Diane Watkins of The Palmetto Bank, Dr. Mark Stamey of Pendleton Dental Care.
In 2008, Fred and Rick approached "Friends of the Park" and asked if we would be interested in taking this on as an annual fundraiser for the park. "Friends of the Park" agreed but only if the Town of Pendleton could sponsor the fireworks which was the biggest expense. We have been so pleased that the town has agreed for the last two years to be the sponsor of the fireworks. The money that they donate is given back to the town and more as everything made from the event goes back into Veterans Park.
All of the generous donors listed above continue to help sponsor the event today along with many more including Mann Promotions, Dr. Frank Forgnoni, AT&T, Design South, E-Z Clean, 1826 On The Green, Krause Moorhead Draisen, McConnell Family, Brewer Family, Kelly Family, Hellams, Kirkleys, Bank of America, American Legion Post 113, Mayor Burdette, Sherods, Lou Robinson, Wal-mart, Jim Vogel, The Islander, PEEPS and many more.
We also have Inkind Donations from Carolina Bottled Water, Coca Cola, Pet Dairy, Electric City Printing, Norman Durham, Bi-Lo, Crenshaws, Liberty Halll Inn, Timeless Tours and Travel, CVS, Sam's Club, Frito Lay, The Print House, Palmetto Routers, Pendleton Flower Shop, Village Alterations, Publix, Central Textiles, Granny's Restaurant, Griffs, Main Street Designs, Tribbles, and many, many more. Prizes are donated for the Bingo With The Mayor and delicious cakes and cookies for the Bake Sale.
Many groups are involved to help make this event possible. Besides the Town of Pendleton, we have the American Legion, Boy Scouts, PEEPS PreSchool and AfterSchool Programs, area Churches, the Pendleton Fire Department, Pendleton Elks Lodge, The Anderson County Sheriff's Department, Pendleton Recreation Association, EMS, Upstate Marines, and many many more organizations and individuals.
So you see that Pendleton is a community that pulls together and makes things happen for the betterment of our community.

This is a community wide event made possible by volunteers and sponsors in order that we can raise money to help make Veterans Park the best it can be.

- Wow wonderful lens. Very enjoyable. I traveled from Amarillo, TX to Durham, NC several years ago. Spent almost 3 months on a construction job and wanted to see South Carolina while I was there. My wife, who was born in S.C. was was pregnant with our oldest daughter and having complications. I had to hop a bus home and never got to make the visit.

American Pie
Don McLean- American Pie (with Lyrics)
Click more info for description* Please comment, rate, and subscribe. Thank you! Lyrics are also below- A long, long time ago... I can still remember How that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while. But february made me shiver With every paper I'd deliver. Bad news on the doorstep; I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride, But something touched me deep inside The day the music died. So bye-bye, miss american pie. Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." Did you write the book of love, And do you have faith in God above, If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock 'n roll, Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you're in love with him `cause I saw you dancin' in the gym. You both kicked off your shoes. Man, I dig those rhythm and blues. I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck With a pink carnation and a pickup truck, But I knew I was out of luck The day the music died. I started singin', "bye-bye, miss american pie." Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye And singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." Now for ten years we've been on our own And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone, But that's not how it used to be. When the jester sang for the king and queen, In a coat he borrowed from james dean And a voice that came from you and me, Oh, and while the king was looking down, The jester stole his thorny crown. The courtroom was adjourned; No verdict was returned. And while lennon read a book of marx, The quartet practiced in the park, And we sang dirges in the dark The day the music died. We were singing, "bye-bye, miss american pie." Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye And singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." Helter skelter in a summer swelter. The birds flew off with a fallout shelter, Eight miles high and falling fast. It landed foul on the grass. The players tried for a forward pass, With the jester on the sidelines in a cast. Now the half-time air was sweet perfume While the sergeants played a marching tune. We all got up to dance, Oh, but we never got the chance! `cause the players tried to take the field; The marching band refused to yield. Do you recall what was revealed The day the music died? We started singing, "bye-bye, miss american pie." Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye And singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." Oh, and there we were all in one place, A generation lost in space With no time left to start again. So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick! Jack flash sat on a candlestick Cause fire is the devil's only friend. Oh, and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage. No angel born in hell Could break that satan's spell. And as the flames climbed high into the night To light the sacrificial rite, I saw satan laughing with delight The day the music died He was singing, "bye-bye, miss american pie." Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye And singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." I met a girl who sang the blues And I asked her for some happy news, But she just smiled and turned away. I went down to the sacred store Where I'd heard the music years before, But the man there said the music wouldn't play. And in the streets: the children screamed, The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed. But not a word was spoken; The church bells all were broken. And the three men I admire most: The father, son, and the holy ghost, They caught the last train for the coast The day the music died. And they were singing, "bye-bye, miss american pie." Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." They were singing, "bye-bye, miss american pie." Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "this'll be the day that I die."

Patriotic Music For Your Enjoyment
U S A MILITARY MARCH Patriotic Song Marine Corps Hymn
U S A MILITARY MARCH Patriotic Song The Marines' Hymn is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps. It is the oldest official song in the U.S. Armed Forces. The song has an obscure origin—the words date from the 19th century, but no one knows the author. The music is from the Gendarmes' Duet from the opera Geneviève de Brabant by Jacques Offenbach, which had its début in Paris in 1859. The Marine Corps secured a copyright on the song on August 19, 1919, but it is now in the public domain. The initial verse is "From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli". The Montezuma phrase refers to the Battle of Chapultepec, which took place during the Mexican-American War. The Tripoli phrase refers to actions during the First Barbary War and the Battle of Derne. The "Marines' Hymn" is typically sung at the position of "attention" as a gesture of respect.
