The Presidential Campaign Is A Good Time To Remember the Value of Free Speech

The First Amendment to the Constitution goes into high gear when my opinion or beliefs clash with yours.

One of the most exciting efforts currently gaining momentum is, I believe, "1 for All." This is a national nonpartisan program designed to build understanding and support for First Amendment freedoms.

When I saw this: "The First Amendment serves everyone, regardless of faith, race, gender or political leanings. It is truly one amendment for all," on their website, I felt a renewal of my own dedication to this fundamental fact of American democracy.

Defense of First Amendment rights is a responsibility of everyone. Everyone.

The First Amendment

Old Glory

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Freedom of Speech

What Is The Value of The First Amendment?

Is it first, second, or third among the Bill of Rights that are attached to the Constitution?

Have you ever wanted to cut off someone else's freedom of speech? Has your freedom of speech ever been threatened?

This on July 26, 2010 from The Washington Post, a conservative newspaper. Courts have long ruled that the First Amendment protects the right of citizens to take photographs in public places. Even after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, law enforcement agencies have reiterated that right in official policies.

But in practice, those rules don't always filter down to police officers and security guards who continue to restrict photographers, often citing authority they don't have.

What's the best reason to have freedom of speech in a democracy?

The 1st Amendment enables citizens in a free society to express their thoughts, beliefs, and for the press to criticize government.

It allows citizens to practice whatever religion they wish.Or no religion at all; and to mobilize for, or against, social change.

BFuniv.com says:

It intentionally limits government tyranny by allowing cohesive citizen activism.

A wonderful lens and I very much like how it's focus is especially towards the teenager of today which is tomorrows future. Getting them educated and knowing their rights is something our public schools do not do anymore. It is up to those of us who will stand for our freedoms to keep what our forefathers carefully drafted in the Constitution and Bill Of Rights to continue for everyone. Thanks for a wonderful lens.

Even though free speech is a right, I don't always feel free to express my opinions.

My favorite way to promote freedom of speech? I guess it would be both exercising my right by speaking my mind, and listening with understanding (which is not the same thing as agreement) when other people speak their minds.
