GiveAways are a great way to build your Mailing List
Everybody loves something free. Free products and services make the world a better place:) And giving something away for free can also be a very good marketing strategy.
Giving something away for free is a great way to show people you appreciate them and also one of the best ways to build up your email subscriber list.
You have seen this all over the place. You subscribe to an email list to get some product for free. To get the product you must subscribe to someone's email list and you are then automatically taken to a place to download what ever they are offering in exchange for your subscription.
Many marketers build up huge email lists of prospects using this method. They give you something useful in exchange fo your subscription.
What Products/Services can you use for GiveAways?
Some of the products I have used for giveaways are:
=> A teaser/chapter of an ebook I wrote,
=> 1 year free hosting at my hosting website,
=> free software that I obtained for free through other free giveaway events and have rights to distribute or sell it,
=> links to free products and giveaways going on and
=> free membership to a forum I run.
The products you are giving away for free should try to be something similar to what you will try to sell to your subscriber later with email marketing. When they subscribe to your free gift you know that they are interested in that topic and you can always teach them and recommend them to your other similar products that they might buy from you. You can also recommend other peoples useful products to your list for a referral fee.
How It Works : Step By Step
You will need to use an email list management or autoresponder software system to help you get the subscribers, manage them and email them as per you requirement.
I use two list management/autoresponder systems for my different lists. I use NoraBots.com and Aweber.com. These are great both systems and you can use either one to mnage all your lists and subscribers.
You login to your account and create a new list. Both the systems provide you video tutorials on how this is done. The system will provide you with some html code that you can put on your webpage or opt-in squeeze pages.
Once you have setup the code on your page you are ready to go. Don't forget to mention what your subscriber will get once they join your newsletter.
When somebody sees your newsletter subscription form and subscribes, the list management software automatically adds them to your list and also sends them a confirmation email for them to re-confirm their email address. They have to click on a link that is automatically generated in that email to confirm their subscription request. Once they do that they are now your subscriber and will again automatically be sent another email (welcome/thank you email)with a link to download the free gift you promise them.
All these steps can be automated when you use good services such as NoraBots.com or Aweber.com. They both have free trial period for you to test them out and also provide comprehensive help and video tutorials that will help you setup and get subscribers in no time.
Why You need to Build a List of Email Subscribers
Having a responsive list is like having a license to print money. You can email your list with new offers and products anytime you want. As they have opted to receive your email, they most probably will read your email and buy whatever useful items you might be recommending in your email to them.
It is easier to email to your list new ideas, new products, recommendations and just about any news you may have without the problem of spam complaint (your subscribers opted to receive your newsletters)and advertising cost.
Just write an email, press send and your desired information goes directly to all your subscribers immediately. What could be more effective and profitable than this?
Building Your List With Free GiveAway Events
The marketers together do a lot of promotion to get visitors to join the giveaways. Once they join they can view all the free products available from each marketer. They can hen sign up for the products they need with the person providing it. I do know of some people gaining several hundreds of subscribers through these events. So that is the upside to these events.
The downside to these events is that they attract more freebie seekers than potential prospects. Also all the effort you put to promote these events is better spent sending people to your private optin subscription form rather than sharing your subscribers with other marketers participating in the event.

What is a giveaway, or a giveaway event?
A giveaway event benefits everyone involved because product owners get exposure, and people get free stuff... You have to be invited to a giveaway event somehow and you have 2 choices: you can be a JV partner recommending other product owners to come to the event, or you can be somebody who opts in in to get some free stuff.

Internet Giveaways As List Builders
By Gary Harvey
The giveaway event is a list building technique that the home based business owner could consider as another tool in his or her promotional toolkit.
Newsletter publishers who wish to grow their mailing lists without the cost of advertising are now using giveaways as tools of choice because of the many benefits.
In this article, I would like to answer the main questions that people have about internet marketing giveaways.
QUESTION: First of all, what is an internet giveaway?
A giveaway site is where one or more marketers are giving away reports, software, ebooks, audios, videos, graphics, website templates, memberships, teleconferences, etc... the list of what you can pick up for free is quite huge.
QUESTION: Why do marketers give their stuff away like this?
Really it's all about LEVERAGE. One marketer joins in the giveaway so that he can leverage the combined access of all the participants. For example, if you have 500 people on your mailing list and I have 10,000 on mine, then your offer is presented to 10,000 new people. That way, you are leveraging off my much-larger list. You benefit.
But I also benefit because I potentially reach 500 new people when you send your group an invitation to visit the giveaway site... because they see my offer and may choose to download my giveaway item.
Add in the fact that dozens of marketers and publishers will usually participate together and you can see the massive marketing advantage available here.
Even the little guy gets good exposure to a huge audience of prospects. Giveaways are a great list-building tool.

Increase Web Site Traffic - Drawing Traffic With Online Giveaways
By Sean Ray
The premise of the online drawing or giveaway is really quite simple. By opting in to a contest or sweepstakes, your visitor has the chance to win fabulous prizes. Some Internet marketers create offers relevant to their products or services, while choose items based on their broad appeal. Here are some ideas to get you started:
1. Offer a month's worth of your product free.
2. A free consultation and evaluation.
3. A year's subscription to your ezine.
4. Tickets to a sporting event.
5. Free airfare (travel agencies or other travel websites).
6. Free software - perhaps it is your software. A limited time offer for the first 1,000 visitors.
7. A year's worth of free gas (insurance companies, auto dealers).
8. A year's worth of free groceries (online grocery services).
9. Free phone services for a year.
10. Free DSL or other high-speed Internet connection.
11. A year's worth of dog food (pet supply sites).
12. Free Internet domain and web hosting package.
13. Provide a donation of $1,000 to the charity of the winner's choice.
14. A $1,000 shopping spree.
15. Your mortgage paid for a year (a financial institution).
These are just a few of the great ideas that might draw visitors to your site. In addition, keep them coming back by allowing them to enter once a day for the duration of the promotion. Contests and giveaways are a great opportunity to be a hero and make someone a winner. They are also an excellent way to keep them coming back repeatedly.

Giveaways are great for building a list, but you must be able to create a list of buyers not freebie seekers. As in Get More Buyers, I use a free product to get an initial opt-in then immediately after they give me their name and email address I send them to a low cost related product, this way they have a good chance of buying from me.
Thanks!
