Thousands of free images in GIF and JPG format are available online. If you search for clip art by keyword, you'll discover mostlinks lead to tiny pictures, or to more text links that lead to other link lists that ultimately connect you to graphics directories - arrrgggh. It can be tiresome just tracking down a single good free clipart image. You get the picture (no pun intended).
Today's search technology is friendlier for clipart hunters; many search engines now display image results or text links.

Graphics File Formats and Sizes
What type graphics work should I use?
GIF, JPG (low resolution), PNG, SVG
For online viewing you only need a low resolution (72 dpi - dots per inch) bitmap (raster image) graphic. You can't make bitmap graphics larger without pixelation, but you can make them smaller without losing quality.
GIF and JPG format graphics display well for web sites and blogs. Most newer browsers will also display PNG and SVG graphics satisfactorily.
TIF, PNG, JPG (high resolution)
Bitmap graphics in large sizes or higher resolutions work well for printed projects. Try to use a graphic with at least 100 dpi for office or home printer projects. For commercial print jobs, you'll need a 300 dpi graphic or photograph.
EPS, AI, WMF, SVG, DXF
Vector graphics are infinitely resizeable and perfect for print work. Most vector images do not play well on web sites and blogs. You'll need a graphics program that can modify vector images in order to export a web-compatible bitmap graphic (GIF, JPG, PNG) from the original vector image.

Using Your Free Graphics
Free Clip Art - It's Not Just for Printing or Web Design
Many free graphics you find online are ideal for making fun and frugal clip art paper crafts, quick print labels, party lists, decorations and signs for home or classroom projects. You can use JPG and GIF graphics in any word processing program, resize and organize them using Picasa, and modify them with MSPaint or PhotoShop or any other graphics program.
You can also simply print, cut and glue to make paper collages, decorative crafts, greeting cards or decoupage creations.
Your creative options for aren't limited to publishing, web design or paper crafts. You can use free clip art for other clip art crafts including sewing, quilting, iron on transfers, plastic crafts, stickers and 3-dimensional crafts.
Graphics Permissions - Copyright, Linking, Modifications, Terms of Service
Make sure you're using copyright free graphics, or credit the creative owner
The important things to remember are: be sure you can legally use the graphics, and don't link to graphics on another web site without authorization.
Download the clipart you want to use to your computer, and then upload it to your blog, web page or lens, or to your filesharing service like Flickr or Webshots.
Unless the copyright owner gives you permission to link to their graphic directly, or if their terms of service require you to link to the graphic on their site or blog, you should never directly link to a clipart image or photo on the Internet.
The exception to this is if you store copyright free files on your own web server, or if you upload public domain graphics to a file sharing service.

Guidelines for Use of Free Clip Art and Media - Respect Copyright
Free Graphics for Display but Not for Sale or Distribution
Many artists and free graphics sites permit use of free clip art for personal use only. Most graphic sites request that you post a text link to their site to credit them as the copyright owner and original artist if you use their clip art, fonts or photos.
Never develop a collection of free graphics, photographs, media or fonts to sell or distribute without permission from the copyright owners. Don't use free graphics for products you sell unless the TOS clearly state you may do so.
Always get permission from the owner if you plan to use a free graphic for a commercially printed item or to make goods for sale on Zazzle, CafePress or other creative outlets.
Some graphics sites permit commercial use and/or derivative works from their free images.
These guidelines for copyright respect and terms of service apply to all graphic media, video, music and fonts you find online.

Photographs as Clip Art
Finding Free Photographs
You can find wonderful photographs online that have been released into the public domain. If you're using a photo for personal use you can generally use any photo or graphic you find online. At Morguefile and BurningWell, photographers grant liberal use of the photos they post and make available. Some photos posted at Flickr are okay to use for commercial projects, but others are just for viewing. Always confirm you aren't infringing on copyrights if you plan to publish, distribute or sell anyone else's work.
If you find a photo but need to modify it, you can find free tools online to do that, too. Check out Picasa, Phixr or Pixenate. Picasa is a free download you install from the Google suite, or as part of the Google Pack; Phixr is a nifty little web-based tool and Pixenate is all that and more.
