There are many good keyword tools that are free to use, including Google's keyword suggestion tool. To form a good base, you must do your keyword research. Find out what your potential customers are searching for, then target those keyword phrases. One big mistake many make here is targetting the highest volume keyword phrases. Just because you sell waterproof red widgets for a specialty purpose does not mean you want to rank for the term "widgets". Choose keywords that will bring you targeted traffic. Targeted traffic will convert much better, and you will be able to rank for the lower traffic keywords in a shorter amount of time.

Website planning - Once you know the keywords you want to target, you need to build your website accordingly. You need to name your pages properly, use proper meta tags, properly place your keyword phrases in your content and put together a good link structure to take full advantage of the optimization you will do down the line.

Content building - Content is king. You need good, original, high quality content. Spend some time building your content, this is the backbone of your site and marketing. Write your content with your keywords in mind, but do not keyword stuff. If you are targeting "red waterproof widgets", try to start your first paragraph with that keyword phrase, and try to end your last paragraph with that keyword phrase. If you are able to use it elsewhere in your content without forcing the phrase in, you should also do that. Don't keyword stuff!

Link building - This is of paramount importance if you want to get good natural traffic from the search engines. Links can be built from many sources. Directories, article author boxes, text links, link exchanges, blog postings, links from other content sites. This is the meat of your internet marketing, and once you have a proper base built, this is what you will be working on for the long term.

A great place to start when link building is directories. These are free links, and it will take only time for you to submit your site. Another good source is to simply email other webmasters who run sites in your niche. If you offer high quality content and a site that offers some value to their visitors, there is a good chance they will link to you. Finally, you can purchase tools and hire people to build links for you. Here is a great source where you can build cheap backlinks quickly.

When building your links, make sure to use your keywords as the anchor text, and build a variety of different types of links. As you get going, you will see what works best for you.
